The accuracy of GI in Filament is not high compared to both Iray and 3Delight. Real-Time Preview Capability

Iray provides a limited real-time viewport that allows users to preview changes, but the updates are generally not instantaneous. This means that while you can see what you’re doing, there’s often a noticeable lag, particularly in complex scenes.

Radeon ProRender is a path-traced render engine that uses GPUs/CPUs from AMD and other vendors to produce stunningly lifelike images. On the other hand, Iray can leverage both CPU and GPU, but it exclusively uses NVIDIA GPUs to produce photorealistic images for both interactive and batch rendering workflows. A brief overview of AMD Radeon ProRender and NVIDIA Iray

Iray offers physically based lighting and materials.  It is a high-performance, global illumination rendering technology that generates images by simulating the physical behavior of light interaction with surfaces and volumes. Images are progressively refined to provide full global illumination. NVIDIA Material Definition Language (MDL) defines materials properties for Iray, including surface color, reflection or refraction properties, surface light emission, and scattering and absorption properties of volumes. 

When combined with AI, Iray brings the power of deep learning to both final frame and interactive photorealistic rendering. Iray also supports VR from panoramic snapshots to fully immersive experiences.

Users can get Iray with Plugs-in or SDK Integration. Currently, Iray offers plugins for 3ds Max and Maya, both of which take advantage of Iray technology. The AMD Radeon ProRender is a powerful rendering tool that is available for free, making it an accessible option for many users. It offers an open-source software development kit (SDK) under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows developers to customize and enhance the rendering capabilities. Additionally, free Radeon ProRender plug-ins are freely available for various popular 3D DCC applications, including 3ds Max, Inventor, Maya, Blender, Houdini, and Unreal Engine. 

On the other hand, the NVIDIA Iray, while a robust rendering solution, is not available for free. The licenses for the Iray for 3ds Max and Iray for Maya plugins are priced at $295 for a one-year subscription. However, both plugins offer a 30-day free trial, allowing users to explore their features and functionality before committing to a purchase.

CPU/GPU rendering

Radeon ProRender can simultaneously use and balance the computing powers of multiple GPUs and CPUs on the same system and at the same time. It uses open standards and supports AMD HIP (beta support), OpenCL or Apple Metal. This allows it to work seamlessly with a variety of AMD GPUs and CPUs, as well as those from other vendors, as long as they support OpenCL or Apple Metal.

Similarly, Iray supports any number or combination of GPUs and CPUs on one machine. It also gives you control over which is being used for rendering. Multi-GPU systems are generally recommended for optimal performance when using Iray. Using CUDA and OptiX, Iray supports NVIDIA CUDA-capable GPUs only. 

Supported OS and DCC apps

Radeon ProRender works across Windows, Linux, and macOS. It’s important to note that as of now, Radeon ProRender’s Linux support is only available for Modo and for the Blender and Houdini plug-ins. AMD Radeon ProRender’s macOS support is currently only available for Modo and Cinema 4D, and for the Maya, Blender, and Houdini plug-ins.

In response to market trends, NVIDIA changed its product strategy for NVIDIA Iray plugins and transferred the development, sales, and support of the plugins to Lightworks (part of Siemens now), 0X1 Software, and migenius on November 20th, 2017. Siemens is responsible for Iray for 3ds Max, 0X1 Software handles Iray for Maya, and migenius manages Iray for Rhino and Iray Server.

Unfortunately, as of January 31st, 2023, the Iray for Rhino product was retired and is no longer available for sale. Currently, only two plugins remain – Iray for 3ds Max, which is available for Windows only, and Iray for Maya, which supports both 64-bit Windows and Linux.

Radeon ProRender vs Iray: GPU rendering

We know that AMD emphasizes strong CPU rendering performance with Radeon ProRender. However, GPU rendering performance in Radeon ProRender is still noticeable. You can use one or multiple GPUs or use both CPU and GPU devices simultaneously. While CPU + GPU rendering can be slower or faster depending on the relative performance of each component, GPU (especially multiple GPUs) is always recommended as it will accelerate rendering. 

The Radeon ProRender plugin (particularly the one for Blender) is becoming much better optimized all of the time. We see a pronounced uplift in the GPU rendering performance from one version to another version of Radeon ProRender.

This GPU rendering performance improvement has seemingly come from under the radar and is so impressive. It’s a sign that AMD cares deeply about optimization, and eking as much performance as possible out of their GPU hardware.

Iray GPU rendering 

Iray has two different render modes: Iray Photoreal (interactive, ray-tracing-based render mode) and Iray Interactive (interactive raytracing render mode, faster but less accurate than Iray Photoreal). Both leverage NVIDIA CUDA-capable GPUs and require GPUs with CUDA compute capability 5.0 and higher. If a machine doesn’t have a CUDA-capable GPU, it will automatically run on the CPU. While rendering on the CPU can still produce the same images, it typically takes longer to complete compared to GPU rendering.

Multi-GPU systems are the preferred choice for Iray applications for faster rendering and better performance scaling.

Best Iray settings for fast rendering in Daz Studio

Render times in Daz Studio can vary greatly depending on the project’s complexity. While the ideal settings may still result in longer renders, default configurations could neglect opportunities for us to optimize the renders using the available system resources. In this article, we will look deeper at the best settings in Iray for fast rendering in Daz Studio.

Why should we use the Iray rendering in Daz Studio?

When rendering in Daz Studio, we can choose two render engines between 3Delight and NVIDIA Iray.  

3Delight, Daz’s original render engine, is CPU-based. It has almost a cartoonish look since it fakes rendering 3D objects with something that is not compatible with physically based rendering (PBR). 

Iray, which comes from NVIDIA, has increased creative abilities within Daz. More importantly, Iray is compatible with PBR maps, which can typically get more realistic renders. It has become tremendously popular as part of the Daz Studio workflow.

For optimal performance, Iray requires an NVIDIA GPU. If you use AMD (even top-tier) GPU, Iray won’t function as expected, unfortunately. However, if you use an NVIDIA GPU, Iray is a game-changer render engine. The Daz community has wholeheartedly embraced Iray, ensuring strong support and the ability to use new rendering capabilities with existing assets. Iray helps render faster, leverages HDRI technology, and gives full control over detailed scene elements.

Best Iray settings for fast rendering in Daz Studio

Let’s now explore the numerous settings within Iray. Iray operates exactly according to its configured parameters. As an unbiased renderer, it requires defining specific criteria. This is determined solely through its render settings. 

Open Daz Studio, and go to the Render Settings tab, which contains various sub-sections that we will break down in the following sections.

General settings

This section covers Dimension Preset, Pixel Size, Aspect Ratio, Render Type, Render Target, Image Name, Image Path, and Auto Headlamp. Each significantly impacts resolution, file-saving location, lighting effects, etc.

For example, the Auto Headlamp setting. Unlike many others that relate mainly to the output file, this is an important option frequently overlooked by new users, yet it can directly affect the render appearance. This is usually enabled by default we can see the scene view even when no lights are manually added to it. While it is helpful for rendering in Daz Studio, we should turn it off. 

Render mode

There are two options for the render mode – Photoreal and Interactive. Each has different settings that impact both render speed and quality. If you want the highest results, Photoreal is recommended. However, Interactive is a better option for fast iterations. Interactive uses different algorithms to calculate the final render result and it is much faster, but at the expense of the quality.

Note that available settings will change depending on the render modes we choose.

Progressive Rendering

Progressive Rendering is the most important tab to change the render time. This section includes Update and Completion Settings, which control the number of samples and time allocated for iterative rendering loops.

Update Configuration

This refers to Min Update Samples and Update Interval (secs). The sample count determines the number of samples generated per rendering iteration. Concurrently, the interval provides important guidance to the renderer about how much time to dedicate to each render call. Longer intervals typically increase efficiency while shorter intervals produce more frequent updates.

Completion Configuration

This category includes Min Samples, Max Samples, and Max Time (secs). The minimum sample count sets a baseline for the rendering loop to progressively conclude. In contrast, Max Samples guides the renderer on the highest number of samples to produce per loop. Increasing the allocated time per loop extends overall render time but allows the renderer more processing time before loop termination and transition to the next loop.

Converged Quality and Ratio in Progressive Rendering

By default, these settings are set to 1 and 95% respectively. Increasing the quality value demands more thoroughly converged pixels, extending render time. Render times show an approximately linear relationship with the specified value, so doubling the quality nearly doubles render time.

Note that choosing a value above the default 0.95 could potentially lead to greatly prolonged render time. The rendering converged ratio is an estimation updated periodically, not after every render loop.

Optimization

Settings like Caustic Sampler and Guided Sampling can help optimize your render by influencing lighting effects and quality.

Caustics involve the refraction or reflection of light rays by a curved surface, creating characteristic effects. While Daz Studio produces caustic-like effects naturally, enabling the Caustic Sampler setting can enhance these effects, especially for glass or liquids.

At times, activating this setting may improve both quality and reduce render times. When the caustic sampler is not in use, enabling Guided Sampling can notably boost quality, especially when paired with Firefly Filter. However, it may heavily impact system memory usage. NVIDIA recommends using Guided Sampling for strongly obscured light sources blocked by walls or environment maps, volumetric rendering, soft shadows from large area lights if tessellated, and moderate caustics  (though very sharp caustics still require the Caustic Sampler.)One important setting in this Optimization section is the Instancing Optimization. You can set it to “Speed”. In theory, this may improve render time.

Filtering

Settings like Firefly Filter and Noise Degraining Filter help eliminate unwanted artifacts and noise. 

Fireflies refer to randomly scattered bright white pixels in complex lighting areas. The Firefly Filter effectively removes these.

The Noise Degraining Filter operates differently in Iray based on the render mode. In Photoreal, it can be set from 1 to 5, with five settings of increasing aggressiveness: pixel clipping, smart median, smart average, limited blur, and limited auto blur. A setting of zero deactivates the filter entirely. Modes 1 to 3 are more conservative, focusing on eliminating noise in complex scene areas without compromising image sharpness. Modes 4 and 5 are more aggressive, so you should use them cautiously. Based on the scene’s requirements, you should also do some Experimentation.

In Interactive Render Mode, these controls are not accessible. Instead, a simple filter is available, defaulting to a Gaussian filter that subtly blurs the image to reduce noise artifacts.

Tone Mapping

Near the bottom is the “Tone Mapping” tab, which contains options you typically don’t want to modify.

This is because these controls compress the image’s dynamic range, similar to post-production adjustments like exposure, gamma, saturation, and film ISO. You should use other software instead for these edits. However, if you don’t use other software, you can still test with different values. 

For example, the Exposure affects brightness of your render. If your render looks too dark, you can reduce this value. Note that, light sources of all kinds, including whether camera headlamps are on or off, also impact the final look.

Adjusting tone mapping settings directly affects the final render right away. If the render doesn’t meet your expectations, you will need to render it again, which might take a long time. 

However, note that it’s best to leave tone mapping On rather than Off, to avoid broken renders.

Use GPU or GPU(s) for faster rendering in Daz Studio

In the Rendering Settings menu, there is an Advanced section. There you can find some advanced settings. In the Hardware tab, we can and should turn on the GPU there, as the GPU is significantly better than the CPU for Iray rendering in Daz Studio. 

We can also try the hybrid by using both GPU and CPU at the same time. However, in some cases, it can make things worse, and lead to slower performance.

The best cloud rendering service for Daz Studio and iRay

Daz Studio is a computer graphics program for creating highly configurable 3D scenes, from scratch or from pre-imported models. It’s a very famous tool for 3D artists and creators, with robust and vast variety support of different tools and assets (such as posing, wardrobe, hairstyle, background, etc.). With its easy-to-use workflow and free subscription, Daz Studio is preferred by many. The rendering tool often come free with Daz is iRay by Nvidia.

In this article, iRender guides you on the system requirements and the best cloud rendering service for Daz Studio and iRay.

1. System requirements for Daz Studio and iRay

In this section, we will introduce and suggest a system requirement for Daz Studio 4.21:

        • Operating system: 64-bit operating system
        • Processor: Intel Xeon/Core 2 Duo or Quad /Core i7 or AMD Opteron/Phenom processor
        • Memory: 2 GB RAM min (3GB+ RAM recommended)
        • Disk space: 1GB free hard drive space for installation
        • Graphics card: Nvidia RTX 2060 or above

However, these hardware are outdated and we will need to deep dive into what is recommended for Daz and iRay.

        • Processor: this is not an important factor when you work with Daz Studio and iRay. However, of course you will need an strong enough processor to handle the GPU.
        • Memory: minimum RAM should be 32GB. Or you can base on the VRAM of your GPU to decide how many RAM you will need. According to Daz users experience, RAM should be 3x more than VRAM to make sure your scene will not run out of system memory.
        • Disk space: there’s no recommended space, but you will need large hard drives because Daz’s library is often large.
        • Graphics card: Nvidia RTX 2060 or above is okay for a good start.

The first benchmark is Daz 3D:

In this table of render times for Daz, RTX 4090 is the fastest card, only takes 1 minutes and 4.23 seconds to render the file. When you stack more GPU, the render time will reduce to 25.81 seconds. However, it’s not linear, as 3 x RTX4090 is only 2.5 times faster than 1 x RTX4090.

RTX 3090 renders the scene in 2 minutes 7.21 seconds, about two time slower than one RTX 4090. So it actually follows the trend of Nvidia of making new generation doubles the performance of old generation.

The second benchmark is iRay, same scene:

With iRay, RTX 4090 still shows its superior, with render time is 62.449 seconds. RTX 3090 render time is, once again, about 2 times slower than one RTX 4090.

However, when we see iRay performance on multiple RTX 4090s, the speed is better than Daz test. Here 3x RTX 4090s is about 2.9 times faster than one RTX 4090, so it’s kinda linear when it’s come to speed.

So in general, we can see that RTX 4090 is about 2 times faster than RTX 3090. Multiple RTX 4090s is faster than single RTX 4090, but it’s not a perfectly linear reduction in render time.
