Understanding Physical Lights in KeyShot with iRender

Lights in KeyShot are pretty straightforward. You’ll create better images in no time if you have an in-depth knowledge of the several types of light you can access, how to produce, move, and change them, and when to use each type.

There are two options for lighting your scene with KeyShot. The standard method is HDRIs, however, physical lights can also be used. It also works well to combine physical illumination with HDRI. Simply drag and drop a light material from the KeyShot Library onto a piece of geometry in your scene to add a physical light. KeyShot has five different light material types that each behave differently and offer a variety of purposes for lighting your environment. It would be easier for you to select the best light for your specific situation if you are aware of the many KeyShot light material types. 

In this article today, we will learn about Physical Lights in KeyShot to help you create quality images.

The Different Types of Lighting in KeyShot

In KeyShot, there are actually two different “kinds” of light. HDRIs, which are light from images. Additionally, there are physical lights, which are lights made of materials (called Physical Lights).

Image-based Lighting

High Dynamic Range Images, or HDRIs, include brightness information in addition to color. Using this information, we can illuminate a rendering. Most people find that using high-quality HDRIs makes producing realistic lighting easier and faster. This is partially due to the fact that they were taken with a camera and included a variety of information about the scene. The materials in your rendering look better as a result of these reflections.  

Physical Lights

You can use physical lights to illuminate an object. This transforms the item into a source of light. The scene is lit up by light beams that are projected from the source. Compared to an HDRI, the light behaves considerably more like a real-world light source. The lighting configuration used by a photographer is typically more accurately imitated by employing physical lights. 

How to create Physical Lights in Keyshot

Simply drag and drop a light material from the KeyShot Library onto a piece of geometry in your scene to add a physical light. KeyShot has five different light material types, each of which runs differently and offers a variety of purposes for illuminating your scene.

Area Light Diffuse

  • Each surface of the geometry it is applied to emits light, maintaining the geometry’s visibility.
  • Use for shadows and soft lighting
  • Area Each triangle on a surface emits light in a normal direction; if you’re not familiar with triangles, check tessellation.
  • Used most effectively for local illumination
  • To optimize efficiency, only enable the Apply to Front of Geometry or Back of Geometry checkboxes as necessary.

Point Light Diffuse

  • A single point at the center of the geometry is applied to emit light.
  • When a point light material is used, the geometry disappears.
  • Use for sharper shadows and highlights
  • Point lights are omnidirectional, they emit light from a single point in all directions.
  • Best for lighting up an entire scene (think of a mini-sun)

  • Because light emits only from a single point in the geometry it is applied to, it is extremely efficient.
  • The geometry disappears and is replaced with an IES cage
  • Since IES Profiles are directed, they can be pointed by turning the geometry they are applied. IES Profiles are pre-made, standard light files with accurate color, shape, and intensity information.
  • Useful for most effectively imitating manufactured light bulbs
  • Adjust the multiplier to change the brightness

Spotlight

  • You can imagine a spotlight as a point of light whose output is cut and whose light is reflected in a cone.
  • The light’s hue may be changed, and you can even control the light’s form and color by putting a stencil texture in front of it.
  • This slider controls the size of a virtual stencil disc that always fits the beam if you apply a texture on the spotlight.
  • When adjusting the light beam’s angle, use the Constant Light Output function for ease. To calculate the size, you can adjust the beam’s angle.

Emissive Light

  • Not suitable for lighting a scene
  • Good for low-intensity lighting
  • Each surface of the geometry it is applied to emits light. Comparable to “Area Light Diffuse”
  • used for light-emitting materials such as bioluminescent materials, illuminated displays, and small lights (such as those found in phones, tablets, computers, glow-in-the-dark televisions, and LEDs).
  • Each triangle on a surface is illuminated by emissive lights in the normal direction.
  • Only as needed, apply to the front of geometry or the back of geometry; don’t enable both checkboxes to increase efficiency.
  • Adjust the intensity to change the brightness.

While it is hard to say that one type of light in KeyShot is inherently superior to another, we can compare their advantages and disadvantages. As mentioned above, HDRIs typically make it simpler for a newbie to get pleasing results rapidly. On the other hand, professionals may frequently achieve a higher level of realism by using physical lights.

Placement of Physical lights in KeyShot

You can put physical lights anywhere in your scene. The exact location of a light source significantly affects how the scene looks. The separation between each HDRI’s “light source” and the object cannot be altered. That’s because each of them is represented by a separate image. This picture encircles the setting like a beach ball. As a result, the distance between each light source and the scene’s center is equal.

The best way to avoid limiting creative direction is to have control over the actual location of the light. The overall appearance of an image can be achieved by strategically placing lighting.

Physical Lights Can Look Boring

The lack of detail while using actual lighting in KeyShot could be a drawback. A plane or a sphere will typically be the only simple shapes used for lights in KeyShot. A viewer can see the light source when it reflects off of bright objects like glass, metal, or glossy plastic.

However, the level of detail in the image is a benefit of HDRIs. A window, for instance, might appear as a light source in an HDRI. A window’s frame, mullion, window sill, curtains, and whatever is outside the window will all be present in this window. All of these particulars add depth, realism, and recognizably reflective surfaces.

Physical Lights in KeyShot Can Add to Render Time

Unfortunately, more realism and complexity also mean longer render times. This is accurate for physical lights. Physical lights allow for better realism while HDRIs simplify the process at the expense of efficiency and render time.

More accurate ray (light) tracing is needed when using physical light sources. This takes longer. with most circumstances, adding real lighting to a scene with KeyShot will make it slower. The likelihood of fireflies will also rise in a scenario with physical lights. This effect can be diminished by increasing the material samples on the light source.

Physical Lights and Shadow Control

One of the main advantages of physical lighting is that it makes it easier to manage shadows. The realism and impact of an image are greatly influenced by the use of shadows. You may make sharper shadows by scaling down a light source. You can soften the shadows in your scene by increasing them. 

You can control scale and hue using physical lighting, which can make your settings come to life. You have control over the shadows’ level of clarity and appearance.

Way to use the new camera keyframe animations in Keyshot

What is a camera path animation?

For those new to Keyshot, KeyShot’s camera path animation allows you to move the camera around your scene on an organic and fluid path. The great thing is that you can design this path. It’s easy to make changes and helps you add some unique camera angles and movements to your animations.

In KeyShot, there are partial animations and camera animations. Since path animation is applied to the camera, it is created by adding animation to an existing camera in your KeyShot scene.

How to use Camera Animation?

Adding a Keyframe Animation

You’ll need an animated scene and an open Animation timeline before starting (A-key or choose Window, Animation).

You can add a camera keyframe animation in one of three ways below:

  • Using the Animation Wizard: Select Keyframe from the Camera Animations section by clicking the Animation Wizard button on the Animation timeline, then click Next. The next step is to choose the camera you want to animate from the list of visible cameras.
  • Through the scene tree: Finding the camera, right-clicking it, and choosing Keyframe from the Add Animation flyout menu will allow you to animate it.
  • Using the Camera List: The final method for adding a camera keyframe animation is to choose the camera from your camera list located under the Camera tab. Choose Keyframe from the Animation flyout menu by performing a right-click. (Note: If the Animation menu is grayed-out, unlock the camera.)

Working with Camera Keyframes

Once you’ve added a camera keyframe animation, the Animation timeline’s first keyframe will show up. There are two options for adding keyframes from this point on, both of which can be found on the animation menu directly above the timeline.

Through the Add Keyframe button: This button has a plus symbol in the right corner and looks like a diamond. To use this method, you must first choose the point on the timeline where you want your next camera view to be, then click the Add Keyframe button to add a keyframe to the timeline at that point. Finally, you must move the camera into the appropriate view. Now, as you scrub through the animation, the camera will switch from where you had previously set it to where you have now set it.

With Record Keyframe: This appears to be a recording icon and is located immediately to the right of the Add Keyframe button. You can click anywhere on the timeline while the Record Keyframe is chosen and then move the camera into the desired view at that time. When Record is selected, KeyShot will instantly add a keyframe to the timeline at the location of the camera change.

Both methods allow you to quickly and easily create dynamic animations.

Adjust Your Settings

After adding your keyframes, you can adjust your settings by dragging each keyframe on the timeline to change timing as well as by making adjustments in each keyframe’s Properties pane. It’s crucial to remember that each keyframe has an independent range of motion, so changing one won’t change the others.

When the Properties panel is open and the Keyframe Settings section is expanded, the Interpolation Method setting is an important one that you should be aware of. There are two types of Interpolation Method:

Path Interpolation Method: When Path is selected, your camera will move between points on either side of a target in a straight line, creating an effect like a dolly in and dolly out. Additionally, this approach is very similar to the old camera path animation provided by KeyShot the camera keyframing was replaced. You can change your tension settings the same way you could with camera path animations when Path is selected.

Orbit Interpolation Method: When Orbit is chosen and a camera target is chosen, the camera will move from point A to point B while trying to keep the first camera’s original distance. Because the camera orbits the point of interest rather than flying by it, the camera transition is smoother as a result.

The biggest benefit of Camera Keyframe Animations is that they are incredibly simple to use. They are a faster and easier way of creating dynamic camera movements than combining multiple camera animations. It’s easy to modify the camera path.

Is RTX4090 a good choice for Keyshot rendering?

If you work with Keyshot, a 3D ray-tracing rendering software famous for 3D products design and jewelry rendering, you will definitely know that it supports GPU rendering for some times. The GPU solutions in Keyshot could be up to 13 times faster than CPU-based solutions on desktop, which leads to the question which GPU is the best for Keyshot rendering.

And because recently, we have RTX4090 released and become a hot topic for 3D content and render, let’s see if RTX4090 is a good choice for Keyshot rendering.

Technology overview and comparison

RTX4090, the latest GPU of Nvidia, is based on Ada Lovelace architecture, while RTX 3090 is on the last generation Ampere architecture. The new architecture will introduce to you a new generation of RT cores for real-time ray tracing, Tensor cores for machine learning acceleration, and CUDA cores for basic graphics computations.

The clock frequency is for GPU clock speed, with higher means faster processing. RTX 4090 based clock and boost clock are higher than 2 GHz (2.23 and 2.52 GHz respectively), faster than the old Ampere architecture RTX3090.

The graphics features of both GPUs are kind of the same, with RTX4090’s CUDA is 8.9, while the other are 8.6.

Render config comparison

Come to the render config, you should pay attention to three different types of processing:

        • CUDA Cores (Shading units): more CUDA cores or shading units means faster processing of different aspects of the image.
        • Tensor cores can accelerate the speed of matrix multiplication. It has more applications in machine learning or deep learning, but it also affects the creation of 4K graphics or videos.
        • RT cores is responsible for Real-time ray tracing, a technology that mimics the physical behavior of light rays, delivering a higher-quality and more photorealistic results than other technology. More RT cores means the GPU can do the math of ray-tracing quicker than the others.

RTX4090 is on the next level, when its CUDA cores are about 1.5 times higher than RTX 3090. Same result goes for Tensor cores and RT cores.

Other things you should keep an eye on are TMUs and ROPs.

        • TMUs take textures and map them to the geometry of a 3D scene. More TMUs will mostly mean that texture information is processed faster.
        • The ROPs are responsible for some of the final steps of the rendering process, writing the final pixel data to memory and carrying out other tasks such as anti-aliasing to improve the look of graphics.

RTX4090 is performing great, while its TMUs and ROPs are about 1.5 times greater than RTX 3090.

Theoretical performance comparison

The floating-point performance (TFLOPS) helps you determine the raw power of the GPU. And here, you can see a great improvement where RTX 4090 is 2.3 times higher than RTX3090.

Is RTX4090 a good choice for Keyshot rendering?

In general, we can see that RTX4090 specification is so attractive and could outperform older Ampere architecture graphics card such as RTX3090. However, is it really faster in rendering? We would look into some benchmark tests to have an answer.

Undoubtedly, RTX4090 is the fastest. TechGage team has tested on two scenes, and RTX4090 is 2 or 1.5 times faster than RTX3090.

In the first scene rendered a character, while RTX3090 takes 106 seconds to render, RTX4090 only takes half of the time and finish in 53 seconds.

The second scene is Circuit board and this time RTX4090 takes 40 second to render. It’s about 1.5 times faster than RTX3090.

RTX4090 is a phenomenally powerful GPU. Depending on your project’s render settings, the speed could vary and sometimes it could deliver a double performance. However, there are downsides existing. The new RTX4090 does not support NVLink, so it’s a big disappointment for anyone who want to go for complexity. The power needed for RTX4090 is also higher than RTX3090, while you are not sure that the speed could be 2x faster.

I still say RTX4090 is a good choice for Keyshot rendering, because of its power and high amount of CUDA cores and RT cores. But you can find a render farm for it, not necessarily buy one.

Basic Workflow from ZBrush to KeyShot

The process of rendering your ZBrush models or scenes in KeyShot is simple and is primarily determined by the materials used in ZBrush.

1. Switching Rendering Engines

To use KeyShot instead of the ZBrush BPR, go to Render >> Ex­ternal Renderer and click the KeyShot button to make it the default rendering engine for ZBrush.

2. Configuring the Bridge Options

Change the various options in the External Renderer sub-palette before sending your data to KeyShot.

The most important setting to take into account is the Auto Merge mode, which we recommend leaving enabled. Please see the AutoMerge function description at the end of this chapter for more information.

3. Data Transfer from ZBrush to KeyShot

With the above settings in place, pressing the BPR button (located in the Render >> BPR Render Pass menu or on the right Shelf in the main ZBrush interface) or the Shift+R hotkey will send your current model to KeyShot, launching it if necessary. If KeyShot is already running, it will use the current instance.

You can have the following scenarios inside KeyShot depending on what you have in ZBrush:

If you have an empty KeyShot scene, the Bridge will build it using the information from ZBrush.

If you already have a model loaded in KeyShot that is made up of one or more Sub­Tools and the same model in ZBrush, the KeyShot scene will be updated to reflect the current ZBrush state. Modified SubTools, as well as new and removed SubTools, will be properly updated in KeyShot.

Note: Even if they haven’t been edited, all visible SubTools are always sent to KeyShot.

If you change the Tool or Project in ZBrush, whatever is currently in the Key­Shot scene will be replaced by what is now in ZBrush. This is analogous to creating a new scene.

It is important to note that the Bridge will not save your KeyShot renders automatically. If you like a render, save it before starting another! Otherwise, the new render will overwrite the old one. The Bridge actions are irreversible.

Create Quick Custom Lighting with Keyshot HDRI Editor

The KeyShot HDRI editor is a great tool when you want to create real-world lighting but you’re limited by time or computing power. While the Physical Lights capability is the most accurate way to create realistic lighting and shadows, it can require more resources to render. The HDRI Editor is the perfect solution for rendering realistic lighting at a fast speed. 

KeyShot HDRI Editor Custom Lighting

KeyShot environment capabilities allow you to drag and drop default lighting environments from the Library, Environments tab, import pre-built HDRI’s from third-party libraries, or build them from scratch using the HDRI Editor. Let’s explore how to create Quick Custom Lighting with Keyshot HDRI Editor for your KeyShot scenes with iRender today! 

1. Open the HDRI Editor- Tool to Create Quick Custom Lighting

To start, locate the Create Blank Environment Map option from the icons to the left of the Environments list. This will add a new environment to the list with no lighting and a flat dark gray background color. Open the HDRI Editor by selecting the HDRI Editor tab under the Environment preview. Take note of the options available:  

  • Just below the tab is your Pin list, which contains any pins you’ve added to your scene as well as folders you’ve introduced to organize your groups of pins. 
  • To the left, you have icons that allow you to delete, organize and target your pins
  • Below that, you have a series of buttons that allow you to customize your environment’s background. This is also where you’ll find your pin’s settings, once they’ve been added and selected from the list.

Selecting Background from the list gives you background options. Most users stick with the Color background for their renderings, but Sun & Sky works spectacularly for outdoor renderings, and Image lets you add an image to give your rendering location specific context. 

2. Add Your Pins (lights)

To add your first pin, go to the icons at the top of your pin list and select the left-most Add Pin icon to add a new pin to your list. Each pin you add will represent a single light source. This first light will serve as our Fill light. (You can change the name with a slow double-click on the pin name in the pin list.) Add two more pins for a Key light and a Rim light. Don’t worry, we’ll adjust them next.

3. Adjust Your Lighting to Create Quick Custom Lighting

The easiest way to adjust your lights is to select the pin, then select the Set Highlight target icon to the left of the Pin list. This will allow you to simply click the exact spot on the model you would like the light to hit and KeyShot will automatically position the light within the environment to cast a highlight on the desired location. Select Done (at the bottom of the Real-time View) when you have the light positioned as you like. Repeat these steps for your Key light, by aiming it at the front of the model, and your Rim light, by aiming it at the very top of the model, to separate it from the background. 

Next, open the Color section and adjust the Brightness for each light to best suit your needs. Here, your Rim light will be the brightest to create a slight halo effect along the surrounding edges of your model. Your Key light will be the second brightest to make the front face more prominent. And, your Fill light will be the least bright, which should provide a nice “1,2,3 read” of the model’s surfaces. You can also customize your pin’s shape by selecting the Circular and Rectangular option, below the Pin list, and cut the light in half by selecting the Half checkbox.

What's new in Keyshot 11.2?

KeyShot is a standalone 3D animation and rendering application used by independent 3D designers and artists worldwide. It is suitable for many industries including industrial design, marketing, engineering, entertainment, automotive, architecture, jewelry and packaging.

A few months ago, Luxion released KeyShot 11 with a bunch of updates, numerous new features, and dozens of enhancements. With unremitting efforts, on March 21, Luxion continued to release version 11.1, the latest version with improvements to the new features of Keyshot 11, along with new support for 3D file format import/export, and new plugin options. Keyshot Integration

Instead of placing KeyShot inside 3D modeling software, it provides a more flexible approach with three levels of integration for importing and rendering your designs: plugin, direct import, and LiveLinking.

KeyShot directly imports over 40 different 3D file formats on both Mac and PC. KeyShot 11.2 is a pivotal release that introduces the eagerly anticipated ability to run KeyShot on the latest generation of Macs with Apple silicon chips (including M2 and M1 Pro/Max/Ultra). If you have a newer Mac with Apple silicon, you will experience a 15-30% performance gain in both rendering and overall usability.

The plugins extends the functionality between KeyShot and the 3D modeling application. The plugins developed by Luxion include 3DS Max, Maya, Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Cinema 4D, NX, PTC Creo, Onshape, SOLIDWORKS, Fusion 360, Substance Painter, VStitcher.

Third party plugins developed by Luxion’s partners include 3D Systems, Alibre Design, Deadline, Esko Studio, IronCAD, JewelCAD Pro, MegaCAD, Solid Edge, solidThinking, Spaceclaim, ZBrush, ZW3D.

The plugins also allow Luxion’s LiveLinking technology to establish a link between your 3D modeling software and KeyShot which enables fast data transfer and continuous model updates.

What’s new in Keyshot 11.2?

Keyshot Web Viewer Update

Along with the release of KeyShot 11.2, the publisher has brought a substantial update to KeyShot Web Viewer (available with a KeyShotWeb subscription). KeyShot Web Viewer now provides added Studio support, allowing you to switch between Environments and Cameras, improved transparent materials with support for absorption, reflections, and refractions, a new bloom effect, two-finger swiping to pan the camera, and improved material accuracy when baking (in some cases).

Other new features and improvements include:

  • New Pantone 2022 colors – including the Pantone Color of the Year (Very Peri) added to the KeyShot Color Library.
  • Keyframe animation updates – adjust keyframes without interfering with the rendering in the Real-time View

Way to Create Interactive 360° Product with KeyshotXR

Interactive 360° Product with KeyshotXR

KeyShotXR gives you the ability to turn your 3D renderings into interactive visuals. With KeyShotXR, you can create and present high-quality, touch-enabled, 3D content in any web browser. The content can be viewed using touch-enabled devices (or mouse) and does not require a browser plugin to work. 

While the KeyShotWeb module allows you to not only produce Product Configurators and share your scenes on KeyShot Cloud, but unlocks the ability to create touch-enabled, 360-degree viewing experiences with KeyShotXR.  Creating a KeyShotXR is relatively straightforward, but there are a few considerations when prepping your files for your eCommerce platform. 

Prepping Your KeyShot Scene for KeyShotXR

Before you create Interactive 360° Product with KeyshotXR, make sure to do the following:  

  • Set the scene background to pure white.  

Product visuals tend to work better with a transparent background. This is the most common background color for websites and will provide more flexibility when adding the visuals to your product page. Start by opening the Environment tab in the Project window and open the Ground section to make sure the Ground Shadows checkbox is unchecked. Then, make sure the background Color is set to white under the Background section. (You can also set this in the Project, Image tab with the Photographic option, going to Layers and changing the Background Color to white.  

  • Check the eCommerce platform’s image size & resolution

It’s always best to go by the e-commerce platform’s image requirements, but one option that will provide the widest array of uses for your visuals is a 1:1 aspect ratio with a minimum width/height of 1500 pixels and a maximum of 2500 pixels. Now, let’s create a KeyShotXR. 

1. Select the KeyShotXR Type 

Select KeyShotXR on the Toolbar, hit the X-key, or select Window, KeyShotXR to open the KeyShotXR Wizard. 

When the KeyShotXR Wizard opens, it will prompt you to select KeyShotXR type. For most ecommerce applications, selecting a simple turntable is a good option. This option will produce a KeyShotXR with a smaller file size, reducing the bandwidth used on your website. Check with your website administrator or site host to discuss hosting your KeyShotXR.

2. Select the KeyShotXR Rotation Center 

Once you’ve selected the KeyShotXR type, hit the Next button to select the rotation point. For your KeyShotXR to spin around its center point, the model itself should be modeled with the pivot at absolute zero.  

If your object’s pivot point is not set at zero, you have two options. Go back into your modeling software and add a piece of geometry at absolute zero or add a sphere/cylinder (Edit, Add Geometry…) at absolute zero (Position, 0, 0, 0) then select that geometry through the Custom option.  

If your model’s pivot point is correct, you can select Object and move on to set the Initial KeyShotXR View settings.  

3. Select KeyShotXR Initial View 

These settings will reflect the current settings of the Camera tab, so if you already have your Camera view, you only need to adjust the Inclination (Elevation).  

Your product or preference will dictate the view orientation but, generally, an elevation somewhere between 10-30 degrees works well. Again, check your ecommerce platform’s requirements image specifications. 

You can then fine-tune the rest of your camera’s settings if necessary or hit the Next button to continue.

4. Select Smoothness Control and Render Settings  

Smoothness Control is the smoothness of the (mouse or touch) rotation with more frames providing a smoother experience but potentially longer load times. You can try the default setting or test a higher number (like 24, 48 or 72) to achieve the desired smoothness. On the next page you can change your output settings and hit Render Now or click Render Options to adjust the render settings as you typically would. Just make sure that KeyShotXR is selected along the top of the Output window before rendering.

5. Share Your Creation

Once your KeyShotXR is rendered, go to your KeyShot Resources, Renderings folder. Here, you’ll find a sub-folder for the KeyShotXR that contains your KeyShotXR html file. A folder of rendered frames, and an instructions.html document with an embed code for your website. 

From here, you can add the KeyShotXR folder to a shared company drive to share with others.
