Unreal Engine 5 requires Windows 10 version 1703 and the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) to function.

How to make animation in Unreal Engine

Animation implies motion, but it can consist of different kinds of motion. Anything that can move can be animated, but different types of movement/motion can vary in complexity and requirements. It is also possible to animate things that don’t move in real life.

Set up the Character

Character is one of the most common types of animation that brings humans, animals, and objects to life. This category can also include anything that moves like a human or animal, such as puppets, robots, and monsters. While character animation is probably the type you’ve seen the most, it can also be the most challenging to create. For one thing, a 3D representation of a living human or animal needs to deform (bend and stretch) at joints like elbows and knees, which usually requires an invisible skeleton to be placed inside the character to control it. The visible character is called a skin, and the skeleton and its controls are called a rig. Fortunately, skinning, rigging, and animation are much easier than they were five to ten years ago, with new tools being released regularly.

  • Once your character model is imported, right-click in the Content Browser go to Animation and create an Animation Blueprint.
  • Choose the skeleton associated with your character model when prompted.
  • Open the Animation Blueprint and set up the AnimGraph to define how animations will blend.

Import Assets

Before you import, ensure your assets are in an appropriate format, such as FBX, which is commonly used for skeletal meshes and animation data. If you are using a 3D modeling software (like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max), make sure:

  • The skeletal meshes are exported correctly with their skeletons and animations.
  • The origin points are set up to align with Unreal’s coordinate system (Z-axis up).
  • Proper naming conventions are used for easy identification later.
  • Launch Unreal Engine and open your existing project where you want to import the assets. You can also create a new project if needed.

Creating an Animation Blueprint

Start Animating and render your scenes

Now you’ve got everything you need to start working on your animation project in earnest. Set up your tools for your chosen frame rate and resolution, and get to work. Use your storyboards and reference materials to guide your work through the project. The usual method is to work on one scene at a time, and put it all together later, in the editing phase.

The use of 3D animation requires you to render each frame of your animation, which means turning what you see on the computer screen into individual image files that the computer can form into a movie. Depending on the software you use and the complexity of your scenes, this process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days. Be sure to render out the scenes at the required resolution for your chosen platform.

Professionals usually render each frame to its own image file, then pull the frames together during the editing phase to form a movie. This practice means that if any one frame doesn’t turn out as expected in a traditional renderer, you just have to re-render that one frame after fixing the problem, rather than rendering the whole sequence again.

Introducing the Niagara system in Unreal Engine

The Niagara system is Unreal Engine’s next-generation visual effects (VFX) toolset. It allows artists to create complex particle simulations without needing to write code. Niagara is highly adaptable and flexible, enabling technical artists to add custom functionality independently. 

In the Niagara VFX system, there are four core components:

Systems: Niagara systems are containers for multiple emitters, all combined into one effect.

Emitters: Niagara emitters are containers for modules and are designed for single purposes but are re-usable. They allow for creating simulations with the module stack and rendering them in multiple ways within the same emitter.

Modules: Niagara modules are the base level of Niagara VFX. Modules are the equivalent of Cascade’s behaviors. Modules speak to common data, encapsulate behaviors, stack with other modules, and write functions.

Parameters: Parameters are an abstraction of data in a Niagara simulation. Parameter types are assigned to a parameter to define the data that parameter represents. There are four types of parameters: 

      • Primitive: This type of parameter defines numeric data of varying precision and channel widths.
      • Enum: This type of parameter defines a fixed set of named values, and assumes one of the named values.
      • Struct: This type of parameter defines a combined set of Primitive and Enum types.
      • Data Interfaces: This type of parameter defines functions that provide data from external data sources. This can be data from other parts of UE4, or data from an outside application.

Overview of Lightweight Emitters

Niagara lightweight emitters, also called stateless emitters, are optimized to minimize (and in some cases eliminate) the use of tick during the simulation. 

In addition, lightweight emitters don’t need to be compiled, which results in a faster workflow and the amount of emitters in a system will have less impact on performance. This means that in most cases a stateless emitter will be significantly more performant than stateful (traditional) emitter.

Stateless emitters were primarily included to lower Niagara’s memory and CPU costs and speed up VFX artists’ workflows. It:

      • Reduce Game Thread tick cost if the Niagara System is fully stateless.
      • Remove the concurrent tick cost per stateless emitter.
      • Reduce Render Thread cost when the Niagara System is fully stateless.
      • Reduce memory cost, as there are no scripts or particle information in memory.
      • Removes performance impact of emitter count and particle instance count.
      • Reduce (and sometimes remove) the need for compilation.

How to set up Lightweight Emitters in Unreal Engine

Create the Lightweight Emitter Niagara System

Step 1: Right-click in the Content Browser, and select Niagara System.

Step 2: In the Asset Browser, select the FountainLightweight system, and click Create.

Step 3: Next open the NS_Fountain_LW system in the Niagara Editor. This system template includes a lightweight emitter for a fountain effect. 

Modifying the Lightweight Emitter System

Step 1: Double-click the name of the lightweight emitter to edit the field. Rename the emitter Fountain-LW.

Step 2: Select the emitter, then click Spawn Rate. Change the Rate setting to 300.

Step 3: In the emitter, leave the default settings for the following modules:

      • Initialize Particle
      • Shape Location
      • Add Velocity
      • Drag
      • Gravity Force

Step 4: Click the Scale Color module. Change the color to red, so you can distinguish more easily between the regular and lightweight systems when testing. Then click OK.

Unreal Engine 5.5: New Feature Highlights

Epic revealed all the new features in Unreal Engine version 5.5, the fifth significant update since Unreal 5’s release in 2022, during this year’s Unreal Fest. Users in many industries look forward to every new release, hoping their most requested features will be incorporated. 5.5 is a significant update, especially since Unreal 5.4 exited early access and was made public in April of this year.  There are too many improvements to list, as is common with Unreal Engine releases. In addition to the features previously mentioned, Unreal Engine 5.5 includes several other notable enhancements and features. In this blog, iRender will discuss New Feature Highlights. 

Animation

Unreal Engine 5.5 includes several exciting updates and improvements specifically focused on animation, enhancing the workflow for animators and developers enabling you to reap the benefits of animating in context, and reducing the requirement to roundtrip with DCC applications. Here are some of the key animation features in this version.

Control Rig Enhancements

Control Rig has been further improved, providing animators with more tools for creating and manipulating complex rigs directly within the engine. This allows for more iterative workflows and real-time feedback when adjusting animations.

Sequencer

The release sees significant enhancements to Sequencer, Unreal Engine’s nonlinear animation editor, which now boasts a more controllable interface with better filtering and easier access to properties, reducing workflow fatigue and increasing productivity.

Animation deformers

With the ability to create animation deformers within Control Rig and apply them to characters in Sequencer with a single click, you can now create more realistic animation effects like contact deformation or better cartoon-style squash-and-stretch. 

MetaHuman Animator

This release also includes a major update for MetaHuman Animator, which is a component of the MetaHuman Plugin for Unreal Engine. It is now feasible to produce excellent facial animation, including the inference of upper face gestures, just from audio performances thanks to an experimental feature. 

Rendering

On the rendering front, we continue to deliver on the performance and fidelity promises of UE5, while maintaining our goal of leading the industry on real-time rendering innovation. Unreal Engine 5.5 introduces significant advancements in rendering technology, enhancing visual fidelity and performance. 

Lumen 

The real-time global illumination system, Lumen, has been further optimized for performance and accuracy. Lumen can now run at 60 Hz on platforms for which there is hardware support, thanks to many improvements to the systems that underpin hardware ray tracing (HWRT). These improvements also impact the performance and capabilities of Path Tracer and light baking.

Path Tracer

Unreal Engine 5.5 continues to enhance the Path Tracer, which is part of its advanced rendering capabilities.

With regard to Path Tracer, the physically correct, DXR-accelerated progressive rendering mode is now Production-Ready, providing unaltered quality for producing fully-featured ground-truth reference images or final pixels for nonlinear applications.  

Substrate

In the meantime, Unreal Engine 5.2’s experimental material authoring system, Substrate, enters beta testing. Every functionality of legacy materials and every platform that UE deploys to is now supported. Look dev artists can use Substrate’s strong and adaptable foundation to get greater control over the appearance and feel of their objects, even if work is still being done to completely optimize it for real-time applications.

Movie Render Graph

Movie Render Graph (MRG), which was first introduced as Experimental in Unreal Engine 5.4, also advances to Beta in this version, with additional investment made in the graph-based configuration process.

In addition, all asset types are now fully supported in MRG’s Render Layers feature, including translucent objects, Niagara FX, Heterogeneous volumes, Landscapes, and Sky Atmosphere without the requirement to use a Sky Sphere.

MegaLights

This release also provides an early look at a new experimental feature that we’ve named MegaLights. You can add hundreds of dynamic, shadow-casting lights to your settings with MegaLights, which has already earned the moniker “the Nanite of lights.” For the first time, lighting artists may freely employ consoles and PCs to create textured area lights with soft shadows, Light Functions, media texture playback, and volumetric shadows, putting more emphasis on artistic concerns than performance impact.

Virtual production

With a specialized in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) toolkit that powers numerous productions in television, movies, and advertisements worldwide, Unreal Engine is leading the way in the virtual production revolution. With UE 5.5, the ICVFX toolset is now production-ready thanks to the cumulative investment made over several releases, along with advancements in other virtual production and visualization technologies.

Camera Calibration

Additionally, ProductionThe Camera Calibration solver, which is compatible with UE 5.5, has significantly increased lens and camera parameter estimation accuracy. As a result of this effort, Overscan is now integrated into all cameras to accommodate use cases such as post-production camera shake and lens distortion rendering.

Virtual Scouting

UE 5.4’s improved Virtual Scouting toolset is the next step toward production readiness. It provides a robust out-of-the-box experience with OpenXR-compatible HMDs (Oculus and Valve Index are supported by default) and new customisation options through a comprehensive API. Additionally, the toolkit now includes a new VR Content Browser and asset placement, a Blueprint-customizable Transform Gizmo, and additional refinement, such as a color-correct Viewfinder.

Color Grading Panel

Color Grading Panel has been made available for general use in the Unreal Editor, providing a rich, artist-friendly interface for creative color manipulation in any Unreal Engine scene. For offline rendering, another small-but-significant change in Unreal Engine 5.5 is that the Color Grading Panel is now available for general use, not just for virtual production. It offers a “rich, artist-friendly interface for creative color manipulation” and was initially included in the In-Camera VFX Editor (ICVFX Editor).

Mobile game development

Fixing trees hovering up and down in Unreal Engine

Recently we have found out that many Unreal Engine users encounter a weird issue, which is trees hovering up and down instead of moving from side to side in the wind. This causes a lot of frustration and not many users know how to solve it. In this article, let’s try to fix it.

When does this issue happen?

Many users report that this issue of trees hovering up and down happens on Unreal Engine 5.1 or 5.2, and only when they use a Procedural Foliage Spawner or paint trees in Foliage Mode instead.

Fixing Trees hovering up and down in Unreal Engine

This issue is caused by the Wind shader. To find and tweak it, you should go to a material of a mesh that is affected, double click it.

Then go to parent material in the section “General”, click it until you get to the material “MA_Foliage”. In the node editor, search for the node “MF_SimpleWind” and double click it.

After that, you will see “Main Rotator” comment, just double click on the node “ObjectPivotPoint”. In this graph, adjust the node “Transform Position” with Source = Instance & Particle Space and Destination = Absolute Worldspace.
