Introduce Iray rendering plugin for Rhino

If you’re a McNeel Rhinoceros user looking for a plugin renderer that gives you high-quality rendering directly in the viewport then Iray rendering plugin for Rhino is for you. Using Iray rendering plugin for Rhino will give you continual, realistic feedback as you change aspects of your model and define lighting schemes and materials.

As Iray for Rhino uses NVIDIA’s Iray technology, it gives you access to physically-based materials, lighting, and environments and can be easily scaled across multi-GPU workflows. And its ease of use means that whether you’re an experienced Rhino user, or you’re just starting out on your design journey, you’ll be able to create astonishing rendering results within minutes

Let’s visit the list of key features of Iray for Rhino in detail through this blog with iRender team.

1. Physically-Based Materials

This feature proves that whatever materials you choose for your designs will represent real-world materials. These materials will show true reflections, refractions, texture, surface emission and absorption properties on any surface. These effects can be applied to several surfaces, including gem stones, gold, brick and glass.

When you use physically-based materials, your render will look beautiful and realistic. Moreover, there is no compromise on material quality, no matter the complexity of the work you’re undertaking. Whether you’re creating still images or animations, the materials in Iray for Rhino will work for you. The physically-based materials in Iray for Rhino are created through NVIDIA’s intuitive material definition language (MDL). In addition, it allows you to build them as you would see them in the real world.

Therefore, painting on brushed metals and varnishing on paint are a few examples of what can be achieved, whilst you can also add up to 16 layers per material. You’ll even have the option to include additional geometric properties like cut-outs, displacements, and bump maps.

The last advantage, physically-based materials in Iray for Rhino support multiple UV mapping. No one likes to start over again, which is why your newly created material can be saved and used across other MDL compatible applications. This will mean that you can streamline your workflow and create a consistent output.

2. Lighting

  • Physically Based Lighting

Iray or Rhino is a high-performance, global illumination rendering technology. That means it simulates the physical behavior of light with materials and surfaces to give full global illumination. You are able to make the best use of tools such as caustics, sun studies, and luminance distributions, adding them to your rendered scene. The physically-based lighting and materials in Iray for Rhino give you the added ability to accurately simulate lighting scenarios, reducing the need for additional software.

  • Image-Based Lighting

Next, creating the ideal lighting for your image or animation is easily achieved with image-based lighting (IBL) in Iray for Rhino. IBL allows you to use HDRI type environments for your scene’s lighting, changing the lighting angles and exposure at the push of a button.

  • Physical Sun and Sky

In addition, setting the scene is easy with Iray for Rhino’s physical sun and sky feature. It will give you the flexibility to choose the exact time of day and geographical location for your environment. Additionally, you can play with the color saturation to get the exact look you want. By generating a high dynamic range sky-dome, your animation or still image can be set anywhere in the world in the day or the night. Manipulate haze, glow, light intensity, disc size, and placement within the horizon to create beautifully lit and stylized renders that match your design brief.

  • Interactive Lighting Updates

As a designer, being able to quickly get feedback on changes to lighting your scene makes all the difference to your workflow. This is why Iray for Rhino gives you feedback on lighting parameters and position changes in perspective viewport. As a physically-based path-traced render, Iray for Rhino will progressively render your image or animation, giving you access to interactive feedback during scene edits.

  • Iray Light Objects

Light interior scenes with physically based pre-defined lighting options. Iray light objects give you access to a range of lights that can be easily turned on and off in the scene, so you don’t need to add or remove geometry to iterate lighting design options.

  • Emissive Materials

Unless you’re rendering a historical interior, chances are you’ll want to include screens and modern lighting options. This is why Iray for Rhino lets you assign emissive properties to objects and geometry within your scene.

  • Render Element Generation

Iray for Rhino simultaneously generates render elements alongside your main render; this will make it easier for you to add or enhance lighting components within your scene in post-production. The generation of this element has a negligible impact on the time needed to render.

3. VR Snapshots

The VR snapshot feature, which utilises spherical cameras in Iray for Rhino is the perfect component if you are looking to add virtual reality to your design process. Utilising this feature will give you high quality visuals and interactive experiences directly from your scene without the need for remodelling or switching to different software. Creating VR experiences broadens the design view options and provides easily accessible channels for clients to view your work.

The VR features in Iray for Rhino give you the tools to quickly and easily create VR snapshots. These snapshots are beautifully rendered and give you the photorealism and material quality associated with Iray in your VR experience. Simultaneously rendered (left eye/right eye) in the active shade window with interactive eye adjustment and focal distance parameters means that you always have a clear and correct output.

4. Workflow

Iray for Rhino has been designed to make your design process as easy as possible. That is why we have included features that allow you to:

  • Continually review your design while it’s rendering.
  • The inclusion of interactive tone mapping to help you find the desired exposure and white balance.
  • Support for Iray for Rhino’s animation capabilities.

We know that you work in different ways with different hardware and workflow requirements, which is why Iray for Rhino has linear GPU scalability and supports Iray Server (including interactive support so you can stream work from an external machine.)

Discover Nvidia Iray Features with iRender

According to my previous blog, we have known Iray is a GPU accelerated path-traced renderer developed by Nvidia. With Iray it is possible to create an image with great accuracy of lighting in the scene and in high-definition (large resolution). Besides, NVIDIA continually evolves Iray’s feature set to improve the physically-based 3D and VR rendering workflows of designers and digital artists.

Today, iRender will explore the Nvidia Iray in detail through its features in this blog!

IRAY WITH AI

Iray with AI is bringing the power of deep learning to both the final frame and interactive photorealistic rendering. This unique capability coming to Iray will enable the completion of final images many times faster. In addition, it can be used to make interactive rendering many times smoother for a far more rapid understanding of your scene’s composition and lighting during editing.

IRAY AND VR

VR support within Iray ranges from panoramic snapshots to fully immersive Iray VR experiences. VR snapshots are created with spherical lenses that are actually just one of the many new physical and industry lenses available to use from any Iray camera location. Iray VR produces an immersive photorealistic world that you can walk about using a head-mounted display (HMD) to examine your scene from every vantage point.

PHYSICALLY BASED LIGHTING

Iray is a high-performance, global illumination rendering technology that generates imagery by simulating the physical behavior of light interaction with surfaces and volumes. Images are progressively refined to provide full global illumination—including caustics, sun studies, and luminance distributions.

PHYSICALLY BASED MATERIALS

NVIDIA Material Definition Language (MDL) defines the properties of materials for Iray. These range from the color of surfaces to their reflection or refraction properties, light emission of surfaces, and scattering and absorption properties of volumes. They even include additional geometric properties of surfaces—like cut-outs, displacements, or bump maps—that are commonly not modeled in the primary geometric description.

INTERACTIVE 3D RENDERING

Iray is built for interactivity and delivers immediate visual feedback throughout the entire design process. The Iray interactive rendering mode uses advanced approximation algorithms to mimic realism while minimizing unwanted noise. This maximizes performance during interaction.

LIGHT PATH EXPRESSIONS

Iray offers compositing elements that isolate lighting components, using a technique called Light Path Expressions (LPE) rendered in parallel and saved to output buffers. LPEs can be defined on a per object and per light basis, allowing for complete creative control in post processing using standard imaging or compositing software.

MULTIPLE GPUS IN ONE MACHINE

Iray supports any number or combination of GPUs and CPUs running within the same machine and gives you control over which are being used for rendering. This makes multi-GPU systems the preferred choice for Iray applications.

That’s why iRender is an appropriate and effectively service for Nvidia Iray. We provide high-performance servers for GPU-based engine rendering through the Remote Desktop application. In particular, we have dedicated servers for software that primarily focuses on multiple GPUs compatibility and performance such as Nvidia Iray.

Interactive Mode vs Photoreal mode

Interactive mode yields high-speed realistic rendering that can handle most naturalistic visuals including metallic surfaces and subsurface scattering. Photo-real mode goes a step beyond advanced effects like caustics, reflections, refractions, and complex global illumination at the expense of time.

Lighting

Iray provides a full range of lighting techniques including High Dynamic Range Image-based Lighting, emissive materials, physically-based Sun, and Sky. At the fundamental level, common directional, point, and spotlight systems can be easily converted from iClone light props.

IBL & Basic lighting

Image-based Lighting (IBL) is a 3D rendering technique that uses High Dynamic Range (HDR) images to provide 3D scenes with highly-detailed, real-world lighting. You can synchronize sky textures to IBL images, create your own IBL maps from 3D scenes, and then blend and animate them to achieve dynamic lighting effects.

Mesh Lighting (Emissive Materials)

Mesh Light for Iray is a highly versatile lighting system defined by emissive materials from scene objects. Emissive materials emit light across their surface area. They contribute to bounce lighting in your scene and the associated properties such as color and intensity can be changed using iClone glow maps.

Sun and Sky

Iray features an advanced sun and sky system based on the highly accurate atmospheric simulation. Compute blue skies and red sunsets while abiding to physical laws of nature or render any time of the day realistically and expeditiously.

IES Library

IES stands for Illuminating Engineering Society. The IES standard file format was created for the electronic transfer of photometric data over the web. It has been widely used by many lighting manufacturers and is one of the industry standards in photo-metric data distribution.

ES light files are created by many major lighting manufacturers and can be downloaded free from their websites: ALL3dfree, LeoMoon Studios, IES Files, Derek Jenson-3d Artist

Real-light Cameras

Iray for iClone plugin translates cameras directly into Iray while retaining key attributes such as positioning, aspect ratio, depth of field (DOF), and FOV. Realistic camera effects can be achieved with a combination of Iray tone mapping, white balance, bloom, exposure value (EV), and render passes.

* Motion Blur is not supported in the current version of Iray.

Additional Features

Smart Render Viewport

  • Includes tools like Zoom, Fast Scale, and Auto-fit to Window.
  • Pause and resume the render to focus system resources when needed.
  • Copy and Paste rendered image to another application.
  • Direct access to render passes.
  • Set background transparency and include alpha channels in supporting image formats.
  • Adjustable sample times and the ability to adjust render iterations anytime.
  • Turn on auto-refresh for interactive rendering or turn it off to eke out performance.

Management Over CPU & Multi GPU Resource

  • Memory status indicator.
  • Hardware assignment.
  • Nvidia AI-accelerated denoiser for spotless image creation at record speeds.
  • Iray supports any number or combination of GPUs and CPUs running within the same machine and gives you fine-grain control over allocation. This makes multi-GPU systems the preferred choice for Iray applications.

Let’s simplify Iray Render Settings with iRender

Reference this article from the Nvidia documents. iRender team with you will explore step by step to setting Iray Render on your pc. Let’s start!

Overview Iray Render

As you know, NVIDIA Iray Server is a software solution that provides distributed Iray rendering across networked machines.

NVIDIA Iray Render  is a push-button, physically based rendering technology that generates photorealistic imagery for interactive and batch rendering workflows. Moreover, Iray is used to create predictive imagery if you grant a renderer more time to cut fewer corners.

Furthermore, Iray is using the same MDL material description as our RTX renderers but uses some proprietary structures, so please give it a little bit of time for a startup when you switch to this renderer.

Device Settings

Setting

Effect

CPU Enabled Uses the CPU in addition to GPUs to contribute to the rendering.
GPU# Depending on the number of GPUs listed in this section the user can switch on/off a GPU.

Scheduler Settings

Scheduler Mode Selects the scheduler mode.

Interactive Mode updates the Viewport more frequently to enhance interactivity.

Final Frame Mode updates are less frequent to decrease render time for large animations.

Samples Limit Sets the number of iterations to generate the final image.

The more iterations are chosen – the less noise will remain.

A value of -1 indicates that the rendering goes on forever until a scene operation triggers a restart of the rendering.

Quality Limit Enabled Only available in “Final Frame” mode. The system tries to figure out when the quality is good enough and no

artifacts are visible anymore. This can lead to varying render times, depending on the complexity of the scene for a single frame and especially

for animation rendering.

Quality Limit The value for the Quality that one wants to achieve.
Samples per Frame Instead of displaying every iteration (sample) immediately, Iray calculates additional iterations and then displays the result.

This enhances the quality at the cost of longer render times.

Render Settings

Setting Effect
Canvas Selects the output buffer aka AOV (Arbitrary output variables). Some of them use Lightpath expressions and if they do, light path expression (LPE) is displayed and can be edited.

Iray renders these buffers in parallel:

Beauty: The final rendering you normally want to see

Diffuse: An LPE that displays the diffuse contribution

Specular: An LPE that displays the specular contribution

Glossy: An LPE that displays the glossy contribution

Emission: An LPE that displays emission values

Custom LPE: Employ your own LPEs. Learn More

Alpha: The alpha channel of the rendered scene

Irradiance: Displays the light intensity

Denoiser Adds the AI-based Denoiser to the post-processing pipeline, producing noise-free images faster.
Caustic Sample Adds a more precise way to calculate light effects in refractions and reflections.

Use to increase quality in translucent materials or complex material and lighting conditions.

Light Visible in Primary Rays Adds the visibility of lights other than emissive geometry. Options are:

Per-Light Enable: Defined in each light respectively.

Force Enable: Enabled for all lights regardless of light settings.

Force Disable: Disabled for all lights regardless of light settings.

Spectral Rendering

Setting Effect
Spectral Rendering Switches on spectral rendering

Only used if the pipeline is based on spectral input or when using thin-film/dispersion materials, but in general, also does not cost much if the scene is reasonably complex.

The spectral definition will be required for light sources and materials to yield quality results.

When enabled, additional settings (below) will become available.

Conversion Color Space For the conversion of color data to spectra, the rendering core needs to know the

color space the data is defined in. Supported color spaces are:

CIE XYZ (xyz)

Rec.709/linear sRGB (rec709)

Rec.2020 (rec 2020)

ACES2065-1 (aces)

ACEScg (access)

Note: This option also comes into play when spectral data is used without spectral rendering enabled.

In these cases, it defines the conversion of spectra to colors to be used for rendering.

Conversion Intent If color data is used in spectral rendering it needs to be converted to spectral data.

This conversion is ambiguous in the sense that for a given color there typically are infinitely many

spectra that yield that color (metamers). Fundamentally, the conversion in Iray Photoreal is driven

by the goal of yielding smooth spectra with some flexibility to steer the details for reflection colors.

Natural: Smoothness is preferred over reflectivity. As input colors approach the edge of the gamut,

the intensity of the resulting spectrum necessarily decreases. Consequently, highly reflective saturated

colors may render darker when spectral rendering is enabled.

Faithful: Sacrifice some smoothness to yield greater compatibility with color rendering

Note: This option only has an effect if “Conversion Color Space” is “rec709”.

For other spaces, the behavior is similar to “natural”.

Color Matching By default, the photometric rendering mode uses the CIE 1931 2 degrees standard observer as color matching

functions. Setting this option to cie1964, the color matching functions can be changed to the CIE 1964

10-degree standard observer.

Matte Ground Plane Settings

Setting Effect
Enable Switches on the Matte ground plane that allows for adding an invisible shadow catcher plane and/or reflection plane. If switched on the parameters (below) are exposed.
Reflectivity Enter a value from 0 to 1 into the RGB field to control how reflective the plane is.
Glossiness Controls the glossiness/roughness of the ground plane.
Shadow Intensity Move the slider or enter a value to control the intensity of the shadow being cast on the fake ground plane.
Position Let you enter the position of the “fake” ground plane.
Rotation Axis Grants rotational control of the “fake” ground plane.
Environmental Rotation Drives the orientation of the environment.

Advanced

Setting Effect
Enable Limits the number of light path bounces.

The default is 23, but this value can be lowered to speed up rendering performance at the price of correctness of the scene.

Firefly Filter Compensates very bright pixels (fireflies) that appear often in path-traced renders. Disable if going for physically correct rendering and enable the caustic sampler instead.
Instancing Configures the use of the RTX BVH acceleration structures.

off: Increases render speed at the price of memory and slower preprocessing/interactive performance (very scene dependent though).

on: Better interactivity when moving objects and memory saving with instanced objects

auto: Let the system automatically choose the “best” setting.

Environment Resolution Environment dome baking resolution/quality.
Smooth Shadow Terminator Reduces facets/artifacts present in coarsely tessellated geometry
Max value for “Samples per frame” Drives the max value for the setting in the Sampler Settings. We limited this to avoid a non responsive system.
Texture compression Allows compression to save system memory. Higher compression saves more memory at the cost of quality. Medium quality is recommended for most scenes.

Speed up rendering with iRender server for Iray Render

Faster render with Iray Server - Network 3D Rendering

One solution to reduce your render times and streamline your workflow is to use a supercomputer or strong workstation. NVIDIA Iray Server is a software solution that provides distributed Iray rendering across networked machines. Iray Server will coordinate a cluster of networked machines to achieve exactly that. Improving your workflow has never been easier because of Iray Server.

1. How does Iray Server Work?

It uses a common installation and licenses to deliver traditional offline batch rendering and interactive rendering to all NVIDIA Iray plugin products, without the need to install any other application.

In addition, all machines running Iray Server coordinate with each other to reduce the time needed to render an image. This allows a render farm to process poster-size images in a fraction of the time of a single machine. A browser-based management console gives flexible control over submitted jobs with the ability to adjust and rerun past jobs.

Iray Server also speeds up your creative process by bridging to your Iray application and streaming back the rendered results as you manipulate your scene. Now even a modest laptop can interact with Iray at the speed of your most powerful machine housing professional GPUs.

Besides, here is Iray System Requirements:

Software Iray client – Iray for Maya, Iray for 3ds Max, Iray for Rhino, Iray for Cinema 4D, DAZ Studio or Siemens NX
Operating System 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Linux
Queued Rendering Locally networked machines with x86 CPUs and/or CUDA-capable GPUs of Fermi generation or later
Interactive Streaming Requires NVIDIA Quadro, Tesla, and/or Grid GPUs
Networking Streaming: 100Mbps Queuing: Queuing 10Mbps Multicast or TCP/IP for distributed rendering

2. Performance Scaling For Efficient Cluster Rendering

Using a cluster of machines for queued rendering to slash rendering times. The more complicated the rendering, the greater the benefit from adding more machines. Each machine in a cluster always contributes its maximum capability, making it easy to maintain efficiency even when machines vary in their individual rendering speed.

3. Iray Server Features

Figure out all the latest features below:

3.1. Rendering

Iray server software has been made fully compatible with Windows or Linux operating systems. Secondly, our installation supports distributed rendering between machines or interactive streaming from a single machine, making it convenient for you to implement design changes wherever, whenever.

In addition, Iray server can utilize all supported GPU’s and CPU’s within your machine, giving you the opportunity to make design changes much quicker and easier. Everything is built toward making your rendering experience as smooth as possible; a highly efficient cache management storage system means you can minimize the time taken to submit your render.

3.2. Streaming

If cluster workflows don’t work for you, streaming your workflow across different machines is an alternative. Streaming projects work by using the host machines Quadro, Tesla, or Grid GPU’s to stream to another device. This will essentially allow your secondary device to have multi-GPU processing power, enhancing your workflow’s efficiency and reducing the time needed to complete your job. Streaming your workflow behaves almost identically to local rendering; you will still be able to see incremental updates so you can maximize the quality of your specific job.

3.3. Queuing

  • Clustering

Working on a job with multiple users having access? You can be safe in the knowledge that automatic cluster configuration will occur between all devices with Iray server installed, keeping all users informed and up-to-date with a particular job. Multiple independent clusters can be easily configurable on the same network, allowing complete transparency for all users involved. Having complete control over cluster configurations means that image creation times significantly reduce, making your workflow much more efficient.

  • Workflow

A flexible render queue management system is just a one-way Iray server that streamlines your workflow to make the entire process much easier. Submitting jobs is now a quick, yet error-free job; submitting your job does not need to take into account asset location, project naming, or previously submitted jobs. You can enhance the quality of your render by making incremental updates as you go along with your project, whilst being able to see the progress made on remote devices.

It isn’t just your current jobs that Iray server is optimized for, your previous jobs are also supported. You can make changes to past jobs without the need to re-submit your whole project, making the management of your workflow much more effective. Iray server really is the fastest, most effective approach to Iray rendering across multiple Iray plugins (Iray for Maya, Iray for 3ds Max, and Iray for Rhino).

4. iRender servers is highly recommended to use Iray server

With iRender service, it’s easier to build Iray server on it. We have plenty of machines with powerful CPUs and GPUs to speed up rendering: GPU server 3, GPU server 4 and GPU server 5 are highly recommended.

Daz3D Iray Lighting Tutorial with iRender

Lighting sometimes can be the main asset of your scene and render. Almost always good lighting can improve your scene in every way. You can emphasize the advantages of your scene and remove attention from disadvantages with the light. And your scene can’t be realistic without good lighting. Lighting your indoor or outdoor set in Daz Studio can be one of the most time consuming activities when setting up a scene for render. Most artists will have lighting as a pain point during their workflow and it is not always easy to get to the root cause of why lighting may not work on a set. So in today’s Blog, iRender will give some tips to help you adjust lighting with iRay Daz3D.

Let’s compare the render that used only the default lighting:

You can clearly see how flat the first picture looks compared to the second. It is bland and absolutely not interesting. And the only difference between the two renders are the lighting. So Bolg’s today bring to you about Environmental Daz3D Iray lighting and HDRIs especially. And about the most known lighting setup – three point lights.

Let’s work on a simple scene for beginners. A good starting point for this daz3d iray lighting tutorial would be to find in the Render Settings menu right at the bottom the “Auto Headlamp” option and to turn it off. Headlamp is the lights everything you look into on the viewport. And this even shows on renders. After setting it no “never” everything would be dark. But that is exactly what we want, because we are going to light a scene ourselves.

Environmental Lighting

First of all, let’s look at the environmental lighting. Environmental lighting is something that adds an environment to your scene. And your scene would obey the laws of this environment. For example, you can add sun and sky. Obviously this will make your scene lit like it is outside. Everything about environmental lighting can be found in the Render Settings menu under the “Environment” tab.

Sun and Sky Settings

At the beginning of this Daz3D Iray lighting tutorial, let’s look into the Sun and Sky settings and how to set up them yourself. Firstly, let’s create the simple scene without any lights. Everything used here can be found in Daz Studio right after install for free.

All the Sun-Sky settings in the environment menu have their name start with SS(sun-sky). If you look at them, you can see that it is possible to choose the longitude and latitude of the real place in the world. Also to choose the time. And Daz Studio then will simulate the position of the sun at that time in that place. It is an interesting thing. But it’s quite hard to just place the sun at the position where you want it. It will need some fiddling with all the numbers and sliders. So this setting is not an optimal way to set up the sun.

A better alternative would be to create the sun yourself. And it is quite easy to do so too. Firstly you need to create an object that will play the role of the sun. The best object for this role is the Null object, basically nothingness as object. You can find it in Create > New Null. After that you simply need to choose this object as the sun in the Environment menu, under SS Sun Node.

Then you just need to move this object wherever you want it, and it would move the sun on your scene. Place it lower so it would simulate the sunset or sunrise, higher for noon. Other available settings for the Sun-Sky would be changing the horizon height and its blurinnes. But the more important one would be “SS Haze”. It controls how hazy the weather and the default is set to 0. Note that the sky is never absolutely clear, so it would be unrealistic. This means that it is a good idea to set it to a 1 or higher every time. Also haziness controls sharpness of the shadows. Hazier the the sky – softer the shadows.

In the screenshot you can see how our scene has changed when we added the sun. You can check used settings on the left. Also notice the position of the Null object that is playing the sun(in green circle).

HDRI (Image Based Lighting)

There is a much simpler way to add environmental lighting to your scene. That is an image based environmental lighting. And it’s called High Dynamic Range Images or just HDRI. HDRI is a 360° image that contains info about the environment and its lighting. So any source of light from the picture, be it sun or softbox, also would illuminate your render. Imagine that your scene is transported into place from the picture. That is basically HDRI. There is a default HDRI just from get go available in the Daz Studio. To find it you should use the “Environment map” option.

Just click on the left arrow and find the “DTHDR-RuinsB-500.hdr” in the drop-down menu. This will add the HDRI and override all of the other environment options we made. Even the sun that we added as a null object.

Here how Daz3D iray lighting tutorial scene looks with the default HDRI and its settings:

For this Daz3D iray lighting tutorial we are going to use assets from the HDRI Haven website. We plan to make a warm colored scene, like a sunset. After a little search, we have found the HDRI that should work well with our scene. We chose this image called “the sky is on fire”. You can download HDRIs in different resolutions, the higher the resolution, the better it would work. But beyond 4k it is not a big difference, so we chose 4k resolution.

Here is the result of adding this image based lighting. Render looks much better than previous examples. You can clearly tell that it is supposed to be sunset there, lighting is very warm. Just adding the environmental map is not all. One should also look at the settings. Mainly things like “Environment intensity”, “Environment Lighting Resolution” and “Dome rotation”.

If your HDRI is too dull or too bright for you – then change it to compensate. Lighting Resolution is making shadows sharper on lower numbers or softer on higher. Good idea would be just to match this setting to your HDRI resolution. Lastly, “Dome Rotation” is for rotating your HDRI image relatively to the scene. In our example we rotated the HDRI a bit, to make lighting more orange, because in other rotations it even can be blue.

  • About Three Point Lighting:

In this Daz3d iray lighting tutorial we are going to use the most recognized lighting technique – three point lighting. This setup is the most popular lighting setup that is used in all kinds of media such as films, theatres, photography and even 3d renders. Main advantage is that by using three separate lights in different positions, you have a lot of control over the illuminations of the subject. So it can easily be adapted to a lot of different cases.

Let see how Daz3D Iray works with 6 rtx 3090, 6 rtx 2080ti at iRender:

Catia and SolidWorks: Which One is Better?

Two of the best computer-aided design software in engineering and manufacturing are Catia and SolidWorks. They have been around for a long period of time now, and they each have different tools and features that can help you work on your projects. In today’s Blog, we will take a closer look at the features and points of power and weaknesses of both software, which will be helpful for you to choose the right one for you in your next projects.

1. Catia

Catia is a computer-aided design and manufacturing software developed by Dassault Systems. It is the result of decades of computer-aided design and development in creating complex shapes. It allows direct construction of three-dimensional objects, viewing and manipulating them. Catia right now is huge in the market as one of the world’s leading solutions for product design and development. It is being used by leading organizations, businesses, and companies in multiple industries.

Some of the industries using Catia include Packaged Goods, Mechanical Engineering, Sheet metal Design Engineering, Fastener Design Engineering, and Equipment Design Engineering to name a few.

2. SolidWorks

Solidworks is also a computer design software that enables you to create and edit simple and complicated 3D models for engineering and manufacturing, and it also works as a virtual prototyping software that allows you to create and change according to your needs rather than having to make one in real life. SolidWorks has the ability to execute the most commonly needed tasks of design and engineering because it allows you to build 3D parts from a series of simple 2D sketches and using parametric features and tools that can aid you throughout the whole process. You can put parts together and create assemblies. Also, you can create 2D drawings from 3D parts and assemblies.

3. Catia vs SolidWorks in Action

Catia is aimed at the high-end CAD market, where the designer is not just making a part of a car, but also the car itself, and even the factory where you build the car as well!

SolidWorks on the other hand is a mid-level CAD package that controlled the market over other software because of its shallow learning curve. It is also cheaper than the other ones with the ability to perform at the same level, which means that part-time developers of small and medium-sized companies that are not specialized and involved in big and specific industries such as aviation or automotive will probably find it to be a good choice.

About Modeling:

Catia, for instance, is very well known for its surface modeling as it helps the user to control complex surfaces easily, especially in professional versions, because a lot of the tools are not available in the student version. A good portion of the aerospace and automotive companies in the world rely on it to build their prototypes and for manufacturing.

SolidWorks, on the other hand, probably has the most user-friendly graphical user interface with a lot of parametric modeling tools that can be very effective in designing simple and complex industrial parts for small and medium scale companies and individuals as well.

4. Assembly and Animation

So many designers find that SolidWorks is good when designing assemblies, and creating animations of those assemblies, in addition to doing simulations. But It is important to understand the basic mechanisms and features of the software because it will speed up the process.

SolidWorks is ideal for small and medium scale assemblies and analysis, but sometimes used in large scale projects, Catia is for massive and large scale assemblies, it has different types of workbenches that can be used for almost any imaginable type of design and analysis. Along with its complementary software like DELMIA which tackles the management and manufacturing aspect, and SIMULIA can be used for in-depth analysis. This is how Catia can comprise an entire Product Life-cycle Management ecosystem and can be easily controlled.
