X-particles issue: It doesn't appear after install

X-Particles is a fully-featured advanced particle and VFX system for Maxon’s Cinema 4D. Sometimes you have already installed X-particles but it does not show up in Cinema 4D. You got in trouble with this issue. Let’s read this article to find a solution to the problem. 

Install Location

X-Particles should be installed in the plugins folder in the user preferences folder rather than the folder containing the Cinema 4D program file. There are two possible locations for INSYDIUM Fused installation. The first is the plugins folder in the same place as the Cinema 4D application itself. The other location is in the user preferences folder. 

You have to sure you put it on the correct path. Maxon recommends this location because for security reasons. You may get an unsuccessful installation if you try to install a plugin in the Program Files (or Applications) folders in Windows/OS X.

The user data folder for Cinema 4D can be found in Cinema following these instructions below: 

  1. Run Cinema 4D and open the Edit menu:

2. Click ‘Preferences’. This dialog box appears: *Note that the dialog box tells you where the user preferences folder is and provides a handy button to open it.

3. Click the ‘Open Preferences Folder…’ button. An Explorer (Finder on macOS) window will open at that location. Within that folder, you will see a folder named ‘plugins’. Unzip the downloaded archive file into that folder.

4. Last but not least, if you are upgrading to a new version of X-Particles, you must remove any existing installation. Check both the user preferences plugins folder and the Cinema 4D application plugins folder. Then you delete any other folders containing INSYDIUM Plugins. If you do not do this, Cinema 4D will try to load the plugins twice.

Finally, you will have installed X-Particles plugins successfully!

X-Particles does not appear

If you check this plugin in the right location as above. However, after installing X-Particles it does not show up in the Cinema 4D menu bar. In addition, there will be no messages in the console from X-Particles.

For Windows users, there is an issue that occurs in a small percentage of users to do with missing Windows libraries (DLLs). As with many other Windows applications, X-Particles uses Microsoft Visual C++ libraries when it runs. If these are not installed on your machine the plugin will not run.

The solution to this problem is to download and install Microsoft Visual C++ via this link

If X-Particles is in the Cinema menu bar, but you do not see ‘xpOVDB Mesher’ or ‘xpShatter’ in the X-Particles Generators sub-menu, you can solve it by this solution too.

1. Insydium Mesh tool

Animating with mesh tools is easy, here they have some logo geometry and they’re creating these inset polygons using a mesh tools inset they’re driving the position of those with an animated noise texture. You can see them moving across the surface.

Let’s add a box field that will create a wipe on and off:

They can now layer this up with an additional inset for more detail.

They can use this with displacer and jiggle deformers for the more organic movement:

Now they can test different looks by going to the inset and hiding the interfaces or hiding the outer faces.

So spend the time adding sufficient lights to your Rhino model to see the best lighting results in Enscape.

2. Use Enscape global artificial light dial

When adjusting the brightness and overall look of Rhino lights, it’s suggested to leave their Rhino settings at their default after placing them. Instead, we could use the Enscape global Artificial Light Brightness setting to adjust how bright they are. This is important to determine how strong or soft you need your lights to be. This is not where we determine the overall brightness/exposure of the scene. Rather, we are focusing on the artificial lights’ behavior in the scene i.e. what kind of shadows we want them to cast (harsh or soft), how strong of a contrast we want between the light and shadow areas in our scene, etc.

3. Use Enscape global exposure dial to adjust final exposure

Once you have the artificial lights setting where you like it, evaluate your scene and see if it’s over-exposed or under-exposed. Your scene may be under-exposed if you opted for lower artificial light brightness in the previous setting, or over-exposed if you went for higher light brightness. The final step is to simply adjust the Enscape global Exposure setting to get the appropriate exposure that you’re looking for.

Target Platforms and Devices

UE5 Early Access supports the same target platforms and devices supported by UE4, with the following exceptions:

  • Support for 32-bit platforms has been removed.
  • UE5 Early Access now supports Apple Silicon devices as a native runtime target. (Note, however, that the Unreal Editor runs translated through Rosetta 2 as an Intel binary.)
  • Not all new features currently work on all platforms. For example, Lumen and Nanite do not currently support mobile devices or last-generation consoles, and require an NVIDIA or AMD GPU on PC. Platform and GPU support for new features may or may not change between Early Access and the production release of UE5.For more information on the current platform limitations by feature, see the Release Notes page and the detailed documentation on each individual feature.For the list of supported systems and SDK versions for all target platforms, see the Platform SDK Upgrades section of the Release Notes.

Hardware Requirements for Development

Basic hardware requirements for working with Unreal Engine 5 Early Access are unchanged from UE4. For details, see the most recent UE4 documentation.

However, some of the new features in Early Access will require higher-end hardware to get best results.

For example, to get the most out of Nanite and Lumen, we currently recommend the equivalent of an NVIDIA GTX 1080, AMD VEGA 64, or better. We also recommend upgrading to the latest drivers for your GPU.

Simple Steps to Create Video Creation in Enscape with iRender Cloud Rendering

When navigating a model in real-time is not practical, or you want a pre-scripted path that aligns with your talking points, creating a walkthrough video is the solution. And now with the related updates in Enscape 3.0, the process is even easier! In Blog’s Today, we will cover the powerful video creation features and workflows found within the Enscape plugin. Enscape has a powerful yet simple workflow for developing a video walkthrough.

Getting started with video creation in Enscape

Enscape provides a great video walkthrough renderer in Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Archicad and Vectorworks. The overall process of walkthrough rendering is very simple. First, in your design software, start Enscape, toggle the Video Editor on, and then compose a view in Enscape (see first image below). Click Add Keyframe (the + button) to define the start point. You can then continue this process along the path you would like the video to follow. The path and keyframes are visible within Enscape, as shown in the second image below. The video follows this path and morphs between each keyframe. For example, notice the view direction arrow added at each keyframe. Enscape will smoothly transition between #1 and #2 and then again between #2 and #3.

In the video editor, you can select your different keyframes by clicking on the diamond shapes on the timeline. In addition to morphing the view direction, keyframes allow other adjustments such as Time of Day, Focal point, and Field of View. The duration between keyframes can be adjusted by setting an explicit Timestamp. To finish, once the path is defined, the video may be previewed in Enscape using the Preview command (play button). If everything looks good to you, then use the Export command to make an MP4 file which can be hosted online or generally shared. Keep in mind that you can also adjust the output quality and resolution through the Visual Settings -> Capture tab beforehand.

Creating the video path

A video is created by following a camera path and defining this path has never been easier in the AEC industry when using Enscape. To begin the process, within Enscape, click the Video Editor command (or type V). This will activate the Video Editor UI within Enscape – see image below. Next, while in Enscape, simply compose a view and click the Add Keyframe + button (or type K). This adds a keyframe, represented as a diamond on the Timeline. Continue composing views and adding keyframes along the desired path until it is adequately defined to travel around objects, corners and up and down stairs.

TIP: Be sure to save your path before closing Enscape, otherwise your work will be lost!

Keyframe tools legend:

  1. Add a new keyframe, based on current Enscape view, before the first keyframe
  2. Click a diamond to select a keyframe
  3. Click between two keyframes to add a new keyframe
  4. Add a new keyframe, based on current Enscape view, after the last keyframe

Editing the video path

The path may need to be modified to adjust the view direction or avoid colliding with objects in the scene. Enscape makes this easy by allowing us to select keyframes and then visually adjust them. This process can be started within the 3D view or via the Timeline in the Video Editor. In the 3D view, hover your cursor over a camera (i.e. a keyframe) until it turns green (see next image) and then click. Notice how the camera path has arrows on it, indicating the direction of travel.

Using the controls in the Keyframe Editor, the Time of Day, Field of View, Depth of Field, and Timestamp can be overridden from the current settings. For example, if a keyframe is selected and the timestamp is adjusted, the duration of the entire video is adjusted. Or, if the time of day is adjusted in at least two keyframes, it will morph between these views. To help keep track of where overrides exist, markers are added to the Timeline as shown in the following image. These same adjustments can be seen in Enscape, next to each keyframe as shown in the second image below. It is important to remember to click Update to save changes to the current keyframe.

Save and load a path

If you want to use a path again in the future, you can save it using the Save Path to file… command as shown below. The ability to define multiple paths within the same project is an especially beneficial feature. Save these files in the project folder on the network so the entire design team has access. Once a path is saved, or if you wish to discard the current path, click New video path. The saved file is an XML file. If you edit this file, you will notice each keyframe has an X,Y,Z value for Position and LookAt. These numbers could be modified to make more precise adjustments along the path – be sure to save a copy first!

GPU Lightmass Global Illumination in Unreal Engine

GPU Lightmass (GPULM) is a light-baking solution that precomputes complex light interactions from lights which have their mobility set to Stationary or Static, and stores that data in generated lightmap textures that are applied to scene geometry. This system of baking lighting into textures is similar to the CPU-based Lightmass Global Illumination system. However, using the GPU to generate and build lighting data means that we can leverage the latest ray tracing capabilities with DirectX 12 (DX12) and Microsoft’s DXR framework.

GPULM significantly reduces the time it takes to calculate, build, and generate lighting data for complex scenes, achieving speeds comparable to those of distributed builds using Swarm with the CPU-based Lightmass. Additionally, GPULM offers new workflows with interactivity that enables you to edit the scene, then recalculate and rebuild lighting on-the-fly. This workflow is not possible with the CPU-based Lightmass system.

Enabling GPU Lightmass

To enable GPU Lightmass in your projects:

  1. Open the Plugins tab from the Editor > Plugins menu. Under the Built-in > Editor category, locate and enable GPU Lightmass.

2. Open the Project Settings window from the Editor > Project Settings menu:

a.  Under the Engine > Rendering category, enable the following:

  • Ray Tracing > Ray Tracing
  • Virtual Textures > Enable Virtual Texture Support
  • Virtual Textures > Enable Virtual Texture Lightmaps

b. Under the Platforms > Windows category, set the following:

  • Targeted RHIs > Default RHI: DirectX 12
  • Restart the editor for these changes to take effect.

Additional Requirements for Setting Up GPU Lightmass

The following are additional suggestions to best work with GPU Lightmass in your projects.

Reducing GPU Timeout Detection and Recovery Crashes

In situations where you have a complex scene that can put the GPU under heavy load can cause a timeout delay (or TDR) and subsequent crash to occur within Windows 10. This type of crash impacts not only Unreal Engine but anything on your machine using the GPU. You will typically see a message similar to this:

Enabling Multiple GPUs for Building Lighting

Multiple GPUs to compute lighting for your project is supported when using a NVIDIA SLI-based GPU that also supports ray tracing. Multi-GPU support is enabled by doing the following:

  • GPUs must be connected with NVLink bridges and SLI must be enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • In the Unreal Engine DefaultEngine.ini file located in your [Engine Install Path]/Engine/Config folder, under the [/Script/Engine.RendererSettings] section by adding r.AllowMultiGPUInEditor=1.
  • Pass the command line argument -MaxGPUCount=[n] — where n represents the number of GPUs available through SLI — when launching the editor. For example, -MaxGPUCount=2 would use two GPUs while in multi-GPU mode to compute lighting.

Once the editor starts, you can confirm you are using Multi-GPU mode by opening the Output Log and searching the log for message:

Performance when using multiple GPUs can decrease the build completion times on average. For example, in medium-sized test scenes using two RTX-2080TIs, build times were found to be about 1.7x faster on average when volumetric lightmaps are not heavily used. Improved speeds for build completion are dependent on a number of factors, such as scene size and complexity, engine feature multi-GPU support, and number of GPUs being utilized.

GPU Lightmass multi-GPU support is ideally suited for architectural and virtual production-type environments that rely on a single area. Large game-sized levels might encounter memory and virtual texture limitations depending on their complexity and the amount of VRAM available on the GPU. It is possible for architectural and virtual production environments to reach the same limitations as game-size levels if they have a lot of complexity to their design and set up. Multi-GPU limitations:

    • Volumetric Lightmap calculation is not yet supported. Scenes that have a significant Volumetric Lightmap computation will see less overall performance gains.
    • Irradiance cache is generated locally on each GPU. Depending on the content, you may have slight shading differences between different baked tiles. This can be addressed by increasing the Irradiance Cache Quality, or by disabling Use Irradiance Caching entirely.
    • Texture encoding and denoising are run on the CPU, and are not affected by multi-GPU.
