Introduce Iray GPU rendering plugin for 3ds Max

Bring your 3D designs to life with Iray GPU Rendering plugin for 3ds Max. With access to a comprehensive materials library, intuitive physically-based NVIDIA MDL material creation, and real-world environments and lighting you can quickly achieve stunning images and animations of your designs. A range of integrated post-production features and fine-tuning controls allow finishing touches and refinement for your final shots.

Let’s explore Iray GPU Rendering plugin for 3Dsmax with iRender in this post.

What is Iray GPU rendering plugin for 3Ds Max?

Iray for 3ds Max is a physically-based ray tracing renderer with accurate materials based on NVIDIA’s Material Definition (MDL) standard. This physically accurate engine allows you to create the highest quality images and animations with a real-world approach to materials, cameras, and lighting. The lighting in an Iray rendered image is authentic to the real world, as all light interactions in your scene are represented accurately.

Iray for 3ds Max is based on the NVIDIA technology, Iray, which is used in many professional high-end applications and by top design and visualization companies around the world. Iray boasts improvements including an easy-to-understand material structure and usability enhancements.

Iray for 3ds Max extends the capabilities of the Iray implementation currently included in some versions of 3ds Max, including new features such as full MDL support, interactive rendering, support for cloud or remote renderings, and an improved approach to using and creating physically accurate materials.

The Iray plugin includes 2 renderers; Iray+ and Iray+ Interactive. The Iray+ renderer creates production images while the Iray+ Interactive renderer allows you to navigate models in real-time with results that are almost indistinguishable from the Iray+ renderer. We’ve developed a comprehensive library of high-quality materials and an intuitive material editing UI, which enables you to create the materials you need in minutes. The photometric lights and physically accurate sky system mean all lighting is representative of the real world. Iray for 3ds Max also supports remote rendering, which enables you to harness the GPU power of cloud rendering and render farms.

Why use Iray?

Concepts

Iray GPU rendering plugin for 3ds Max is based on the fundamental concepts of the real world, with lighting physics, photographic settings and the structure of materials all true to life. We use real-world concepts and present the minimum necessary parameters needed to get stunning images and animations.

Interactive rendering

Iray+ Interactive renderer uses advanced approximation algorithms to mimic realism while minimizing unwanted noise. This gives you greater speed in your workflow. The ability to use both renderers simultaneously means you can quickly preview your scene with Iray+ Interactive renderer on your workstation whilst rendering remotely in Iray+ renderer for your production work.

3ds max

We have designed Iray for 3ds Max to complement your existing workflows, not disrupt them. We have kept the number of Iray specific UIs to a minimum and where possible we defer to 3ds Max to accomplish tasks. Where we do use our own objects and parameters we present them clearly and in the familiar formats used by 3ds Max.

Powerful

Iray for 3ds Max is designed to make optimal use of GPU hardware to ensure that your rendering is as fast and as powerful as possible. We recommend using NVIDIA GPUs to enhance the performance of your rendering. Local and remote rendering are fully supported and can be used with many batch rendering tools.

Extensible

Iray for 3ds Max is just one of the many future products in the Iray product line, all sharing compatibility with this and other NVIDIA Iray enabled software. This means MDL materials and other elements can be used at every stage during a workflow from prototyping, review, simulation and manufacture. Iray for 3ds Max includes conversion from mental ray® and Autodesk materials, quickly bringing any existing scenes up-to-date.

Flexible

NVIDIA’s Iray is used by professionals in many industries including automotive, jewellery, architecture, product, interior design and many more. An expansive material library provides the basis for creating virtually any material. MDL provides a powerful method for expressing and sharing any material.

Discover Nvidia Iray Features with iRender

According to my previous blog, we have known Iray is a GPU accelerated path-traced renderer developed by Nvidia. With Iray it is possible to create an image with great accuracy of lighting in the scene and in high-definition (large resolution). Besides, NVIDIA continually evolves Iray’s feature set to improve the physically-based 3D and VR rendering workflows of designers and digital artists.

Today, iRender will explore the Nvidia Iray in detail through its features in this blog!

IRAY WITH AI

Iray with AI is bringing the power of deep learning to both the final frame and interactive photorealistic rendering. This unique capability coming to Iray will enable the completion of final images many times faster. In addition, it can be used to make interactive rendering many times smoother for a far more rapid understanding of your scene’s composition and lighting during editing.

IRAY AND VR

VR support within Iray ranges from panoramic snapshots to fully immersive Iray VR experiences. VR snapshots are created with spherical lenses that are actually just one of the many new physical and industry lenses available to use from any Iray camera location. Iray VR produces an immersive photorealistic world that you can walk about using a head-mounted display (HMD) to examine your scene from every vantage point.

PHYSICALLY BASED LIGHTING

Iray is a high-performance, global illumination rendering technology that generates imagery by simulating the physical behavior of light interaction with surfaces and volumes. Images are progressively refined to provide full global illumination—including caustics, sun studies, and luminance distributions.

PHYSICALLY BASED MATERIALS

NVIDIA Material Definition Language (MDL) defines the properties of materials for Iray. These range from the color of surfaces to their reflection or refraction properties, light emission of surfaces, and scattering and absorption properties of volumes. They even include additional geometric properties of surfaces—like cut-outs, displacements, or bump maps—that are commonly not modeled in the primary geometric description.

INTERACTIVE 3D RENDERING

Iray is built for interactivity and delivers immediate visual feedback throughout the entire design process. The Iray interactive rendering mode uses advanced approximation algorithms to mimic realism while minimizing unwanted noise. This maximizes performance during interaction.

LIGHT PATH EXPRESSIONS

Iray offers compositing elements that isolate lighting components, using a technique called Light Path Expressions (LPE) rendered in parallel and saved to output buffers. LPEs can be defined on a per object and per light basis, allowing for complete creative control in post processing using standard imaging or compositing software.

MULTIPLE GPUS IN ONE MACHINE

Iray supports any number or combination of GPUs and CPUs running within the same machine and gives you control over which are being used for rendering. This makes multi-GPU systems the preferred choice for Iray applications.

That’s why iRender is an appropriate and effectively service for Nvidia Iray. We provide high-performance servers for GPU-based engine rendering through the Remote Desktop application. In particular, we have dedicated servers for software that primarily focuses on multiple GPUs compatibility and performance such as Nvidia Iray.

We are releasing new servers for iRender’s users, which have powerful processing capabilities of AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3955WX @ 3.90GHz. Besides, they have multi-GPUs: 2/ 4/ 6/ 8 RTX 3090 24GB VRAM to boost performance in the rendering process.

Minimum Configuration

  • Cinema 4D R15 – R24 (64 bit only)
  • Windows 7 (or higher) or macOS 10.9 (or higher) operating systems
  • Intel® or comparable main processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 75 MB disk space for installation
  • Network adapter and internet access for license activation
  • RealFlow | Cinema 4D supports GPU-based simulations and multi-core/multi-processor systems.

1. CPU (Processor)

Since fluid simulations are computationally expensive and allocate large amounts of disk space we recommend Intel® i7 or Xeon systems (or comparable) . Vfxarabia also did a test, and realize that clock speed has the biggest impact on CPU performance with Realflow. They recommend those two CPUs:

  • Intel Core i7 10700K 3.8GHz (5.1GHz Turbo) 8 Core –This is one of the highest clock speed CPUs available, and does extremely well with both OctaneRender and modeling / animation applications.
  • Intel Xeon W-2235 3.8GHz (4.6GHz Turbo) 6 Core –Intel’s Xeon W series processors maintain very high clock speeds and have far more PCI-Express lanes than the consumer-oriented Core series.

2. GPU (Video Card)

First, it is a pity to know that Realflow does not currently support multiple GPUs. Second, we have observed that the number of GPU cores makes the difference. As a simple rule, we can say: the more GPU cores, the better. In fact, the Quadro M4000 was about 20% slower than the GTX 970 even though the GTX 970 is almost a third the cost. And even Tesla v100 only has 5120 CUDA cores. Besides, the amount of VRAM determines the size of the simulation and there is currently no fallback on the mainboard’s RAM. With 8 GB of VRAM, for example, it is possible to simulate 12-15 millions of → Liquid PBD particles (assuming that the only open program is Cinema 4D with a scene containing one emitter, one fluid container, and one daemon).

As such, we recommend the NVIDIA Geforce series if Realflow is your primary application. As of October 2020, these are roughly the upper tier of consumer-level GPUs from the slowest to the fastest:

  • GeForce RTX 3080 10GB – Generally speaking, the RTX 3000 is an excellent solid starting point – far faster than anything the 20 Series was, and for a lower price than either the RTX 2080 Ti or Titan RTX. A great choice if you want just one video card for Realflow and it offers the best value for money.
  • GeForce RTX 3090 24GB – Our recommendation for most GPU rendering customers, the RTX 3090 provides the best performance in Octane while also having a tremendous 24GB of memory.

Specially, a simulation with a NVIDIA RTX 3090 (10.496 cores) is about 3x faster than a NVIDIA Quadro K6000 and 9x faster than an Intel Core i7-3930K, for example.

3. Memory

Realflow requires a minimum of 8GB RAM. However, in fact, even for low-poly or simple scenes, you will need at least 16-32GB of RAM for your PC to work with Cinema4d well. If you tend to multitask and this is not your first workstation build, more than 64GB will help you limit data loss and improve Cinema4d stability. That’s also the reason iRender provides our customers 128 – 256GB RAM memory to help hold data of multiple programs running in parallel, so multitasking (running multiple apps at the same time) is smoother and more quickly. We understand the actual needs of the artist, we understand that a modern 3D artist needs to be more creative than just software.

4. Storage

The highest performance drives available today are NVMe based Solid State Drives (SSDs), and these are generally all we recommend for primary drives. SSD will ensure your system will boot as quickly as possible, keeps your system as responsive as possible, and reduces your application/project loading times…

While many other famous render farms (for example Fox Render Farm) also use HDD storage, iRender strongly invests in NVme SSD for the entire render farm despite the expensive cost. We define new era rendering in parallel with fast speed.

3. D5 Render

D5 Render is a real-time renderer based on real-time ray tracing technology. In fact, it combines the benefits of both ray tracing and rasterization to get real-time interactivity and photo-realistic images simultaneously. Although it just came to the market in more than 1 year, it has a lot of potential to show. D5 Render is free for the Beta version (version 1.6 or lower). It is planned to release a community version for free, which is lightweight and serves well for individual usage and educational purposes. Commercial version is much cheaper than Lumion, with 480 USD per user, with perpetual license and lifetime free upgrades.

  • Pros: For D5 Render, SketchUp 3Ds Max and Revit, Rhino, Blender and ArchiCAD are supported now. What is good about D5 Render is that developers released the D5 converter plugin for 3Ds max, which will help your model to remain almost all material and material properties.
  • Cons: However, you will need to convert your model to V-ray to keep all material, then export to D5 Render. It does not support converting from Corona or Fstorm. So if your file is in Corona or Fstorm, you will need to convert to V-ray, then export to D5 Render.

4. EEVEE

If you’ve been using Blender, you might be familiar with the name “Cycles”. That’s the name for the ray-tracing renderer inside Blender, but upon release of version 2.8, a new real-time renderer was implemented called “Eevee”. Eevee is focused on real-time rendering, using clever speedy tricks to sacrifice as little realism as possible when compared to Blender’s realistic Cycles renderer.

PROS:

  • Render time is greatly reduced.
  • Settings can be more intuitive to play with for beginners.
  • It can give faster and similar results in some scenes compared to Cycles.

CONS:

  • It doesn’t provide the realism that Cycles does.
  • Some scenes must be made and tweaked in Cycles before they can render properly.
  • Some materials don’t work immediately.

6. Enscape

Enscape is a real-time 3D rendering software that is primarily geared at architectural visualization. Impressively, this solution eliminates the need to export from BIM software and rework data for presentations as still images or movies. Everything is prepared in the original program.

However, the standout feature of this 3D rendering software is its ability to export project files from Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, and ArchiCAD as standalone executables to provide walkthroughs that can be shared with clients or co-workers. These executables can be used on desktop computers and VR goggles.

  • Pros: Fast and easy to use (depending on the hardware you have), Broad assets library, Price

It is easy as pie to start these walkthroughs. But Enscape is also a great tool to support the designing process. The link between the presentations and the original CAD data means that you can inspect and evaluate any changes you make in a snap. Apart from the photorealistic render mode, Enscape includes several stylized modes like sketch, paper and polystyrene models.

  • Cons:
  1. Medium quality final renders
  2. Materials can’t be edited
  3. Hard to create representative model videos

Touted as the world’s first fully 3D GPU-accelerated software biased renderer by its developer, Redshift offers the flexibility and quality of CPU-based rendering with GPU-based speed.

Unbiased engines tend to be very difficult for artists to render with as they are much more precise with their calculations regarding processes like lighting physics. However, Redshift is a biased engine, meaning there is much more freedom for the artist to get the desired render without having to overwork settings — meaning you can focus solely on creating.

Redshift is easily integrated into programs such as Cinema 4D, Maya, and Houdini, making for very powerful workflows and beautiful results.

  • Price: $500 / license
  • Software: 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Maya, Softimage

Website: https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/

9. Iray

In order to get this powerful renderer, users need to invest from $295 per year. Developed by NVidia, Iray is a biased GPU renderer that’s one of the best 3D CAD rendering software aimed at beginners, students and hobbyists who don’t have expert rendering knowledge, as well as professionals.

However, while it may be beginner-friendly, Iray’s quality shouldn’t be underestimated. This intuitive, physically based rendering technology uses AI denoising, CUDA, NVidia OptiX and Material Definition Language (MDL) to generate photorealistic imagery with great speed and efficiency, making it one of the most realistic 3D rendering software. To explain that in more detail, AI denoising is the use of Tenor Cores on the latest NVidia hardware to bring the power of deep learning to both final-frame and interactive photorealistic renderings. This speeds up the completion of final images and smoothes interactive rendering, producing a faster understanding of your scene’s composition and lighting.

Eevee Rendering In Blender & Advanced Techniques

Since the introduction of Blender 2.8, Eevee has replaced the old Blender ‘Internal’ Renderer. Eevee is focused on real-time rendering, using clever speedy tricks to sacrifice as little realism as possible when compared to Blender’s realistic Cycles renderer.

In the article today, iRender will step it up and cover four advanced settings and properties of EEVEE Rendering in Blender.

1. Indirect Lighting

Eevee is optimized for speedy rendering, not for realism, like the Cycles renderer. But with the right settings, Eevee can nevertheless deliver an impressive level of realism.

One of the most significant differences between Eevee and Cycles is that Cycles calculates bounced light rays in a scene, also known as global illumination (GI) or irradiance, using a technique called path tracing. To make Eevee calculate bounced light you need to add an Irradiance Volume. To do this, press Shift + A, go to the Light Probe submenu and choose Irradiance Volume.
A box-shaped gizmo with a 3D matrix of points appears.

The Irradiance Volume should be placed in such a way that the bottom of the inner cube is just below the floor of your scene, so the 3D matrix of dots is surrounding the scene’s important elements. The dots are points in 3D space where the properties of bounced light (energy level, colors) are sampled and then rendered on nearby surfaces.

The distance between the inner box gizmo and the outer box gizmo indicates the area in which the irradiance effect will fade out. This can be influenced by adjusting the Distance and Falloff settings in the Irradiance Volume gizmo’s Object Data Properties.

The next step is calculating the irradiance. Go to the Indirect Lighting section in the Render Properties and press the Bake Indirect Lighting button.

After a short moment of calculating the irradiance will be added to the scene. The results are usually subtle, but increase the scene’s realism.

As you can see, the red color of the floor has bounced onto the monkey head. The accuracy of the bounced light can be improved by increasing the Diffuse Bounces, Cubemap Size, and Diffuse Occlusion values, at the expense of longer irradiance calculation times.

It is important to note that the bounced light that’s calculated by an Irradiance Volume gizmo is a one-time calculation, and is not updated with each animation frame. This means that if your scene changes during an animation, the calculated bounced light will become less correct or even obsolete.

2. Emissive Objects

If you’re using Cycles, you can turn any object into a light source by assigning a material containing an Emitter shader. In Eevee, such a material does not work unless you calculate the irradiance using the aforementioned steps, because the light from emissive objects needs ray calculations from each normal angle of the object’s faces.

In the example images below, an emissive material has been assigned to an icosphere. As you can see no light is emitted from the icosphere object without irradiance. The Screen Space Reflections do reflect the icosphere without irradiance.

Again: the accuracy of the indirect light calculations can be improved by increasing the Diffuse Bounces, Cubemap Size and Diffuse Occlusion values, at the expense of longer irradiance calculation times.

3. Glass and Other Refractive Materials

Establishing a refractive volume in Cycles, such as glass, is easy: just turn up the Transmission value of the default Principled BSDF material (to a value of 1 for the full effect), and Cycles starts transmitting rays through the material to render convincing glass or transparent plastic.

Eevee is not a path tracing renderer but works by performing speedy trickery, so if you turn up the Transmission value of the monkey’s default Principled BSDF material, this is what happens:

To get you going, here are some common Index Of Refraction values:

  • Air = 1.0
  • Water = 1.325
  • Milk = 1.35
  • Plastic = 1.46
  • Glass = 1.5 (average value, depends on the type of glass)
  • Crystal = 2.0
  • Diamond = 2.418

4. Sub-Surface Scattering

Another eye-catching effect is sub-surface scattering (SSS). This mimics the way light rays are absorbed and scattered inside a volume, causing thin parts to transmit more light than thicker parts. Think of the blood-red color you can see through your fingers if you shine a bright flashlight behind your hand. Once again, Eevee needs to establish the illusion of SSS using a smart, speedy technique instead of hardcore ray-tracing. And Eevee does this quite well. Let’s activate SSS in Eevee:

First, head to the Render PropertiesSubsurface Scattering section, and increase the values a little for a finer result.

More samples refine the SSS calculations, and a higher Jitter Threshold prevents a possible pattern caused by the algorithm. Don’t increase the values too much if you want Eevee to remain speedy/real-time.

The next steps are performed in the Shader Editor, adjust the following items in the default Principled BSDF material.

  1. Usually, you’ll want the Base Color (the surface color) to be different from the Subsurface Color.
  2. Set the Subsurface value to 1.0 to exaggerate the effect.
  3. Depending on the scale and volume of your object you can adjust the Subsurface Radius values. These are essentially RGB values, so the default settings of 1.0, 0.2, 0.1 cause a red SSS color.
  4. To further emphasize the SSS color, turn the Subsurface Color to red as well.
  5. For a final bit of refinement, activate the Subsurface Translucency option in the material settings.
  6. Make sure the Screen Space Refraction option is unchecked, or the refractive properties will override the SSS effect.

You will see that Eevee SSS can create quite a nice candle wax material, but SSS is also very useful for achieving convincing skin, plastics, milk, orange juice and much more.

The Best Cloud Rendering for EEVEE

Eevee is only going to make use of one of graphic card. The reason is that multiple graphic cards CANNOT work together to render a single frame using rasterization which is what Eevee uses , so it will perform best when it benefits from high VRAM capacity. If EEVEE is your primary application, then we recommend using NVIDIA Geforce graphics cards as they generally have higher performance at a lower cost. The best NVIDIA GPUs for Rendering are:

Let’s check the NVIDIA Geforce performance in Blender EEVEE:

Keep this in mind, iRender provides server 3 owning Xeon W-2245 CPU Processor with a high clock speed of 3.9 GHz- 4.7GHz and 512 GB SSD to specifically support the software only make use of a single card. This server comes with the latest RTX 3090 card from NVIDIA with the VRAM capacity up to 24GB.

With the above advantages and the machine configuration package that iRender has released, we believe that EEVEE users will have the most comfortable and effective rendering time.

How To Optimize Octane Rendering In Blender?

OctaneRender was one of the pioneers in the GPU rendering scene when it first launched, and since then has become a household name for powerful yet fast rendering. It’s an unbiased, spectrally correct render engine that leverages RTX hardware to its fullest extent to render accurate images at blazingly fast speeds right in the viewport. It features, among other things, layered materials (as opposed to manually mixing shading layers), Spectral Random Walk Subsurface Scattering, Volumetric Rendering, or Deep Pixel Rendering with full Nuke integration.

Octane is one of these latest names in a growing list of “industry-standard” renderers to join the roster of render engines with official blender support. Luckily for Blender users, Octane offers a special free version of its Blender plugin with the caveat of supporting only one GPU. The plugin comes in the form of a special Blender build downloaded directly from OTOY with the OctaneRender engine built-in. Another note is that Octane comes with its own shader nodes/editor, and as such Cycles materials won’t be automatically ported over to OctaneRender. In the previous article we have known about 5 tips to speed up Cycles. This post will continue to provide 5 tips for optimizing Octane Rendering in Blender.

1. Network Render

Try to have a minimum of two graphics card in your computer when working with Octane, one to drive the screen, and one for Octane to use exclusively. What if your machine has only one GPU? For example, if you work on a laptop. Octane’s network rendering works really well. As long as you have a Octane License for every computer on your network, Octane can use the GPU’s on all the machines for every part of it’s process from Live Preview through to Final Render.

As we might know 2 GPUs is a popular choice for Octane artists in general with medium-sized projects. However, not many render farms offer you such a DUAL GPU configuration. At iRender, we understand the needs of technology artists and launch the server of DUAL RTX 3090 which is even cheaper than 6 x RTX 2080. However, we guarantee that the performance you get will be much more powerful than 6 x RTX 1080, 2080, 2080Ti.

2. Use LiveDB

When time is too tight to create a material from scratch, it is great to know that you can use the ‘LiveDB’ database of materials that come with Octane to create a starting point for what you need. From metals, fabrics, liquids and skin there will be a Material preset available within LiveDB to download into your scene to help you on your way.

3. Explore all of the Kernels

Don’t assume that the three different Kernels in Octane equate to fast, pretty fast and slow. Direct Lighting is my go to Kernel for animation, but it can create gotcha’s such as weird shadows. This is where I can explore PMC and Path Tracing, although on the surface both of these options seem slower, reducing the sample count can still create good results. They also both provide more realistic results, and offer extra features such as caustics.

4. Make the most of depth of field

Usually when using depth of field in CG Renders it sends the render times through the roof. This isn’t the case with Octane. At most, I have only ever seen an increase of 5-10% in render time by adding depth of field, but usually, it’s a lot less and because its in the render, it carries through into compositing passes as well

5. Volumetric powerhouse

Octane can now support volumetric systems like gas, and fire with full emissive and shadow capabilities. This is game changing when combined with tools like Turbulence FD for Cinema 4D. As both of these plugins are GPU-based, they are blisteringly quick allowing many more iterations of sim and render all within one PC.

Final Thought

Octane is a GPU based renderer, which means that it uses the power of a gaming card for it’s render speed. Octane’s license is per machine, but you can build PC’s with up to 12 GPU’s (graphics cards) in them. The more graphics cards you have, the more power and speed you can get. It is proportional. By the way you also should remember that  the cards need to be NVIDIA, so my condolences to those who are fans of AMD at the moment.

However, if you are not on the budget to build a powerful PC like that, you might consider our CPU/GPU rental service. iRender offers multi-card configurations for you to choose for Octane with a diversity of latest cards from NVIDIA: RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 3090 and definitely far beyond Blender’s recommended GPU requirement:

Revolutionize K-Cycles With Powerful Cloud Rendering Service

K-Cycles is a highly optimized custom build of Cycles render engine and real-time viewport effects for Blender. It is fully compatible with Cycles and designed for Nvidia GPUs. With its automatic “K-Cycles Intelligence,” it is a breeze to use and needs virtually no ramp-up time. When you press the render button in K-Cycles, the intelligent processes analyze the current scene and settings to create a set of optimizations which create significant speed increases with little to no degradation in image quality.

There are two outstanding features: Real-time effects in the viewport like BLOOM and Tone Mapping help bring your art to the next level with ease and immediate results. Plans for adding even more features to the K-Cycles engine. Now let’s find out what’s new and interested in this new render engine?

K-Cycles Bloom

  • K-Cycles Bloom is the only Cycles implementation of Bloom in the viewpoint.
  • BETTER implementation of Bloom than the compositor, many more controls for manipulating your bloom PLUS more accurate bloom as well.
  • EASY to use and works just like you would expect.

A feature that Eevee users have used and enjoyed is now available with K-Cycles. Dynamically interact with the scene in the viewport. Adjusting quickly the Bloom settings with fast performance in the preview render viewport. Creating beautiful Bloom effects in no time. The Bloom settings has all the options that are needed to design and easily create and customize your Bloom effect. K-Cycles has higher quality while Eevee blurs and loses the light definition. See below:

K-Cycles Tone Mapping

  • K-Cycles Tone Mapping is the only Cycles Tone Mapping implementation in the viewport.
  • Tone Mapping controls allow you to create a more dynamic scene or change the mood of the scene in no time.
  • EASY to use and design to give great results without the need of Photoshop or compositor.

Dynamically interact with the scene in the viewport. Adjusting quickly the Tone Mapping settings with fast performance in the preview render viewport. Improve the visual quality or change the mood of your scene with Tone Mapping effects with speed and ease of use. The Tone Mapping settings have the most useful options that are needed for your image to stand out or have the final polish without the need of Photoshop or compositor right in the viewport. Let’s take a look at BMW scene adjusted to a cooler tone and and vivid colors with K-Cycles bloom with tone mapping:

Revolutionize K-Cycles with powerful cloud rendering service

There are very few render farms that support K-Cycles rendering because it only delivers world-class performance and impeccable visuals when paired with the newest NVIDIA RTX – based hardware, which is very difficult for many farms who are offering the different lines (Tesla, GTX , etc) or different video cards (AMD). Besides, it is a totally new render engine and is not popular yet to find on render farms. However, we are proud that we support K-Cycles very well. iRender provides you a personal cloud computer with powerful hardware (100% performance – no virtualization). That means you can install any plugin or do render even from a laptop so long as you have a stable internet connection.

Although K-cycles works with both CPU and GPU, unfortunately, the CPU gains for K-Cycles are small compare to default Cycles. So I would not recommend using K-Cycles if your choice is CPU. Besides, we already found that K-Cycles has a very powerful performance with the RTX 3090 in the test above. Therefore, we offer a single card server of 1x RTX 3090 at a very affordable cost for customers who have frequent use needs. We highly recommend this option who Blender users working with small and medium projects.

We understand that lock speed has the biggest impact on CPU performance with K-Cycles. That’s the reason we offer Xeon W-2245 CPU Processor owning a high clock speed of 3.9 GHz- 4.7GHz and 512 GB SSD to specifically support single-threaded tasks. This package also comes with the latest NVIDIA RTX 3090 card recommended and a VRAM capacity up to 24GB.

iRender has a great number of enthusiastic staff that are always ready to support you 24/7. Whenever you have trouble using our server, or even with your software, we – iRender Support Team are always there to help you solve your problem. We believe the quality of support we provide is as vital as the technology we deliver. We provide unmatched support tailored to your specific needs and goals. What IRAY users can get from iRender is not only the best quality products but also the high security and the most comfortable render time.

iRender is one of a few render farms providing a unique transfer file tool, without having to access a third party for transferring data. With this tool called GpuHub- Sync, you can upload your data even when the remote server is turned off and it will automatically sync to the remote servers and vice versa. We provide storage space of up to 1TB for you and most importantly it is completely free.

What you can get more from iRender?

Last but not least, price is an extremely important factor for users. You can rest assured that our pricing schemes are the cheapestyou have ever found, with rates three times lower than that of other solutions. Besides our hard-to-beat prices, we also offer generous volume discounts, which provide you with credit bonuses depending on how much you top up. Professional & High-Speed IRAY Cloud Rendering Service

NVIDIA Iray is a highly interactive and intuitive physically based rendering technology that generates photorealistic imagery for interactive and batch rendering workflows. Leveraging AI denoising, CUDA,  NVIDIA OptiX, Iray delivers world-class performance and impeccable visuals—in record time—when paired with the newest NVIDIA RTX – based hardware.

IRAY is primarily for designers and visual effects artists working with 3D content who require predictable photorealistic imagery. It delivers immediate visual feedback that results in stunning imagery for everything from architecture, engineering, and design to marketing and advertising visual effects. IRAY is gradually becoming a familiar name in the 3D community in general and a professional “assistant” for Daz3D, Rhinoceros, 3Dsmax, Maya, Irayserver, Cinema4D.

Hardware recommendation for IRAY

1. Processor (CPU)

IRAY is primarily a GPU-based engine, so the CPU does not really help in terms of rendering process. However, NVIDIA mentions that “a fast multi-core CPU will significantly improve the scene loading speed” and recommend Intel Xeon/Core 2 Duo or Quad /Core i7 or AMD Opteron/Phenom processor(s) to run iRay. To find out, Puget System also did a test on two processors to see exactly how well IRAY is able to utilize both a high number of cores as well as multiple physical CPUs:

  • DUAL INTEL XEON E5-2687W V3:  3.2GHz with up to 20 physical CPU cores 40 threads across two CPUs
  • INTEL Core i7 6700K: 4.20GHz, 8M, 4 Cores 8 Threads

In conclusion, the difference in performance is much smaller. For CPU-specific tasks, it can usually be taken as an assumption that a CPU with a higher frequency will be faster than a CPU with a lower frequency in a somewhat linear fashion. IRAY, however, is primarily a GPU-oriented rendering engine so this may not be accurate. They already found that in some situations,  you can achieve decently higher performance in IRAY from adding more CPU cores

2. Memory (RAM)

NVIDIA requires a minimum of 16GB RAM for using IRAY render. However, in fact, even for low-poly or simple scenes, you will need at least 32GB of RAM for your PC to work with IRAY well. If you tend to multitask and this is not your first workstation build, more than 64GB will help you limit data loss and improve Redshift’s stability.

3. Storage (Hard Drives)

To use IRAY, your workstation must have Solid State Drives (SSDs). We recommend NVme which is the highest performance drive available today for primary drives. SSD will ensure your system will boot as quickly as possible, keeps your system as responsive as possible, and reduces your application/project loading times even though they have much higher cost.

This is also the reason that many IRAY users cannot find a suitable render farm for their requirements (for example Fox Render Farm also uses HDD storage). iRender strongly invests in NVme SSD for the entire render farm despite the expensive cost. We define new era rendering in parallel with fast speed.

4. Video Card (GPU)

This is the most important factor for performance in IRAY. Normally, the render capabilities will be affected by two aspects: the number of CUDA cores (the more the better) itself and the amount of memory on the card. With large and complex scenes, you will need a good card with a decent amount of video memory.

All RTX, GTX, Quadro and TITAN cards from the Turing, Pascal, Maxwell, and Kepler/Fermi generations are technically supported. IRAY now fully supports real-time raytracing cores from the RTX line.

In the charts above, the first thing to notice is that there is clearly no advantage to using Quadro over GeForce. In fact, the Quadro M4000 was about 20% slower than the GTX 970 even though the GTX 970 is almost a third the cost. Specifically, some Quadro GPUs offer larger amounts of VRAM but also cost far more for the same level of raw performance of GeForce cards.  As such, we recommend the NVIDIA Geforce series if IRAY is your primary application. As of October 2020, these are roughly the upper tier of consumer level GPUs from fastest to slowest.

  • RTX 3060 Ti (4864 CUDA Cores, 8GB VRAM)
  • RTX 3070 ( 5888 CUDA Cores, 8GB VRAM)
  • RTX 3080 ( 8704 CUDA Cores, 10GB VRAM)
  • RTX 3090 ( 10496 CUDA Cores, 24GB VRAM)

Second, when it comes to using multiple GPUs Iray performance scales pretty well. While you don’t get twice the performance with two cards compared to just one card, you do get a very nice bump in performance. On average, going from one card to two reduced render times by about 33% (a third). Going from one card to three cards results in about half the render times (49% to be exact), and going from one card to four cards reduced render times by a bit less than two thirds (60%).

Revolutionize NVIDIA IRAY with powerful cloud rendering service

There are very few render farms that support IRAY rendering because it only delivers world-class performance and impeccable visuals when paired with the newest NVIDIA RTX – based hardware, which is very difficult for many farms who are offering the different lines (Tesla, GTX , etc) or different video cards (AMD). Besides, it is not a popular render engine to find on render farms. However, we are proud that we support IRAY very well. iRender provides you a personal cloud computer with powerful hardware (100% performance – no virtualization). That means you can render or do any intensive task even from a laptop so long as you have a stable internet connection.

As you can see, stacking a few video cards will give fantastic rendering performance. This is the reason we have been hard at work integrating GPU nodes into our infrastructure. Using NVIDIA IRAY, we recommend using multiple card servers. We invested in some pretty formidable hardware, and we are confident that with our new nodes at your disposal, scaling your GPU renders over at our farm will be as rewarding an experience for you as it is for us. At iRender, we provide a variety of servers with powerful CPU & GPU: 6 NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti/ 3080 /3090 and CPU configuration: Dual Xeon E5-2673 v3 (24 cores- 48 threads), RAM: 128 GB and Storage (NVMe SSD) is 512GB, which allows Iray to utilize multiple video cards.

  • NVIDIA RTX Support

In the 2019 release of the Iray SDK, all render modes utilize NVIDIA RTX technology. In combination with AI denoising, this enables you to create photorealistic rendering in seconds instead of minutes.

  • AI Denoising

Using Tensor Cores on the newest NVIDIA hardware brings the power of deep learning to both final-frame and interactive photorealistic renderings. This unique capability speeds the completion of final images and smooths interactive rendering for a more rapid understanding of your scene’s composition and lighting.

  • Multi-GPU and Multi-Machine Setup

Iray supports any number or combination of GPUs and CPUs running within the same machine and gives you control over which ones are being used for rendering. This makes multi-GPU systems the preferred choice for Iray applications, even on cloud-based systems.

In case 24GB VRAM is not enough for your scene, we always have NVLink to help you access more than that (48GB VRAM). This is a technology which addresses interconnect issues by providing higher bandwidth, more links, and improved scalability for multi-GPU system configurations. It can be used as a large memory pool for the GPU to display large and complex scenes.

NVIDIA IRAY Server Application

Iray Server is a software solution that provides distributed Iray rendering across networked machines. It uses a common installation and license to deliver traditional offline batch rendering and interactive rendering to all NVIDIA Iray plug-in products, without the need to install any other application.

If you are using Iray Server, for example with DAZ Studio, you will need multiple computers to run IRAY distributed renders. It’s not economical to buy multiple computers for work. For this reason, iRender farm is confident that we are the most reasonable and effective choice for IRAY server. With our “Open Port” feature, you are able to smoothly run a distributed render in Iray Server batch mode across multiple machines to boost your render performance.

When run on an Iray Certified multi-GPU configuration, Iray Server can process poster-size images in a fraction of the time of a single machine. Iray Server also speeds up your creative process by bridging to your Iray application and streaming back the rendered results as you manipulate your scene.

  1. Create new scene folder (for distributed render).
  2. Create Iray Cluster master shortcut.
  3. Start the Iray Server cluster master.
  4. Setup Iray Server on every slave machine, create Iray Cluster slave shortcut on each slave and start each slave using its Iray Cluster slave shortcut.
  5. Check the cluster master to make sure all slaves correctly joined the cluster.
  6. Login to the web GUI on the cluster master, add the scene to queue and start queue to RENDER!
  7. Check render performance statistics (for benchmarking) and download rendered image.
